Submitting a form with hidden sections

    Hi,

Im new with InfoPath so please be patient with me :)

Ive just designed my first form which I intend on integrating with SharePoint. I have a drop down at the top which controls which fields are visible on the form (the visible fields are in 2 different sections). The only problem is that because these fields are mandatory when the I submit the form I get an error stating that the fields in the hidden section cannot be blank (obviously it doesn't say it to those exact words).

     Can anyone help me please?

Also given I am using SharePoint online - am I wasting my time trying to learn InfoPath? Is there a better application I should be investing my time in learning?

     Thanks

Instead of making the field required, you need to untick the box that says cannot be blank in the field properties. You then need to create a rule with a couple of conditions.

First Select the Field in the Fields section on the right hand side.
Select Control Tools Properties Tab on the ribbon at the top.
    Select Manage Rules.
In the Rules section select New>Validation.
    Select None (under condition)
You need to select what it is that makes the field required. For Example, select a field in your form called RequiredCheckbox is equal to true. Then select the And button.
Choose the field you wish to make Required and select "is blank" and then select OK.
Where it says ScreenTip, add something useful. I usually just add the word Required

    Should work like a charm.

Your other question is one you have to answer yourself. I'm totally new to Infopath and Sharepoint as well - knew nothing about it at all 2 weeks ago. I wanted an off the shelf product with no code to create forms that worked in a web browser. I already had O365 and Infopath does everything I want and more Since Microsoft are supporting it until 2026, I've gone with it. It then gives plenty of time for PowerApps to mature and for me to learn how to use that (it seemed more complicated to me when I started but after a couple of weeks learning infopath, it's probably a bit easier now)

Good luck with your Infopath Journey.

    Hi,

Firstly I just wanted to say thank you for the reassurance I wanted to go down the InfoPath route but was hesitant due to a lot of conflicting information with regards to how long it will be around.

I have added some rules to validate the text boxes either do or don't contain text - but I was wondering how do you trigger the rules to work? I have a submit button on my form and I can quite happily press it without InfoPath telling me the two text boxes which I  have set a validation on to "not be blank" doesn't seem to do anything. Thanks and I appreciate your patience with me :)

Scrap my last comment - I was jumping the gun :)

    The validation now works :)

Sorry I thought I had it - the validation seems to be setup ok rather than the "cannot be blank" BUT if I try to submit the form I still get a warning that the other fields within a different section are required - this time due to the validation not the cannot be blank setting. Any thoughts?

Cracked this one, I setup the form so when a field was changed it added a space to the fields which were coming back as "set as mandatory" but had nothing in them. Everything is getting submitted without an issue - on the next challenge.....
