is there a way to change a form from type "email form" "Browser form"?

I am working with a lady who has created a form as type "email form", then at the end of her development she has come to me and said "How do I get this to publish into a SharePoint library and allow people to fill it in using their web browsers?".

I've looked all over but can't find any way to switch form type - if I take "File | Info | Form Options | Compatibility" I can select either email ot email 2007, but not web browser form.

Is there any way to achieve what she's looking for (change an email form to a browser form), or do I just tell her to re-create her form from scratch?

Well - no promises, but I just did a quick test, and I think you should take a backup copy of the form and save it as source files (from the publish menu). Find manifest.xsf and look for the text xsf2:solutionPropertiesExtension branch="mail" and remove that node - see outlined text in my screenshot. From there, you can save the file, right click manifest.xsf and select design to open back up in InfoPath Designer and use file > save as to save as browser compatible.... then go from there? Let me know if you need a hand, you can attach the template under the options tab in a reply.

    That is staggeringly brilliant!

My .xsf file didn't have the line for "send by mail" in it, but I got rid of the "Properties extension" node that you suggested, saved the file, went into design, went into form options | compatibility, set it to web browser form, published to SharePoint, and lo and behold, what was previously a clunky legacy form becomes a nifty browser enabled piece of loveliness - many, many, thanks.
