Have a sharepoint list show in 2 drop down list boxes on infopath form

     Hello,

I have a sharepoint list which has categories and subcategories as columns.  I am trying to create the infopath form to show the category.  The based on whether or not the category has a subcategory, I want to populate the drop down list for the subcategory list.

    For example:

    Category                              SubCategory

    Cell Phone                           Accessories
    Cell Phone                           Other
    Internet                                 IE
    Internet                                 Firefox

If the user chooses Cell Phone for the category, I want to only show the subcategory in the subcategory drop down list for the cell phone - Accessories and Other.

I have the data connection setup and working find for the Category, including only showing unique value, but I cannot get the filter set to only show the appropriate subcategory.  this is sharepoint 2007 and infopath 2007.  thanks.

    Hi Trush,

To my understanding, you would like to build a form with a cascading dropdown logic based on the initial dropdown category selection. We have a webinar here that demonstrates how to create that logic: Cascading Dropdowns in InfoPath.

However I am assuming that you are only using one SharePoint list, is that correct? The approach will be very similar. You just need to add the proper data filters at the Drop-down list box properties (right click drop-down control > properties > click the select xPath button at the Entries section).

    Hope this helps.

Thank you.  Although your link didn't work I was able to search and find what I needed on the site for cascading dropdowns.

The problem I have is that infopath tells me this will not work in a browser enabled form.  Is there any other option since I need this form to be browser based.

    thanks.

    Hi Trush,

Thank you for noticing that. I have updated the link for the webinar. As for browser enabling, can you elaborate further on the issue? Also, may I know what kind of receive data connection are you using to populate the drop down controls?

    Thanks,

On Sharepoint / Infopath 2007 you cannot have cascading dropdowns with filters on web enabled forms.

I have tried a couple different connections but the one I wanted to use was connecting to a sharepoint list that has the data in it.

Thanks for the additional information. I see that this is indeed a limitation for InfoPath 2007 and will only be possible if you use an owssvr data connection along with some coding. Unfortunately, I haven't tried this method yet but there should be guides out there that shows how this is done via code.
