Filtering multi select list box based on selection made in another field

    Here's my issue.

    SharePoint 2013

    Two Lists:

    Applications

                    Fieldname: Title

    Groups

                    Fieldname: Title

Fieldname: Applications (lookup field consuming Applications list - allowing multiple selections)

    InfoPath 2013

                    Secondary Data Sources:

                                    Applications

                                    Groups

                    Dropdown List: Applications

Multi Select box: Groups (Title Column)

    Example of list records:

    Applications list:

    Fieldname: Title                                Value: Application1

    Fieldname: Title                                Value: Application2

    Fieldname: Title                                Value: Application3

    Groups list:

    Fieldname: Title                                Value: IT Managers

    Fieldname: Applications                  Value: Application1; Application2

    Fieldname: Title                                Value: HR Managers

    Fieldname: Applications                  Value: Application3

When an application is selected from the Applications dropdown list, the multi select field should be filtered based on that selection.

    Example:

Selecting Application2 should cause the multi select field to include IT Managers.

Selecting Application3 should cause the multi select field to include HR Managers

I am very comfortable with filtering secondary data sources in InfoPath, but this has got me stumped, I've never filtered a multi select box based on its multi value field.

    Any assistance is much appreciated.

    Hank

Can you attach a sample form? It would make the issue easier to understand. Under the Options tab is a place to attach a template.

     I'm confused still. :)

You want to filter the allowable selections in the multi select? If so, you add a filter in the multi select's properties.

     You and me both.

What I need is, when I choose an Application from the dropdown, I want only groups that have that application in their Applications field to be listed in the multi-select box.

So, if I choose Application1, the mulit-select box below should show "IT Managers"

Select Application2 will also list "IT Managers"

Selecting Application3 will list "HR Managers"

My problem is that the "Applications" column in the Groups list is multi-select lookup box and when I try filtering on it, I can't get it to work, if were a single value column I could just filter it where "Groups.Applications equals Main.Application"

So, you want the title to show in the Groups multiselect, just filtered on the selected application? I think the attached form will do what you want - save locally, right click and select Design, & preview.

See attached screen grab - no matter what application I choose nothing shows in the Groups box.

Can you preview this one and send a screenshot so I can see the values from the lists?

Great - see how the values for Application in the Group list are the IDs? So we either need to change your application drop down to store the ID, or handle for that in the filter. Attached with both options.

I can definitely see you have it working - I'm going to try updating my other form to see if I can duplicate it.

Thanks so much Hilary - I really appreciate your time on this!

You bet - let me know if you have any questions on the filters for the data source for the multi-select. Dragging the secondary data sources onto the form so you can see the values returned is usually really helpful in figuring some of these things out. One thing that may also be helpful when you set up the filter (and is easy to overlook) is the "Any occurrence" selection from the dropdown in the screenshot attached.

Thank you so much - I was able to reproduce it in my other form.  Again thank you so much!!
