Newbie Question for Infopath/SharePoint (need help!)

Hello, all Iv just been asked to create something in Infopath and SharePoint and by no means am I a developer/Programmer... I have a SharePoint List (Info path form) with about 4 fields in a repeating section, and under it a repeating table. My question is, is there a way I can have the Data in the repeating section submit (the same info) for each Item I create in the repeating table? Any help with be appreciated. Also for looks, if I can hide the repeating table from showing up again once I hit "Add Item" under the repeating table that would be amazing too.

    Hi Spassler and welcome,

SharePoint lists don't support repeating data in the form. Well, you can create a new form from InfoPath and specify repeating, but it only lets you add multiple items and you won't be able to edit multiple items. Maybe that is good enough. If so, launch InfoPath Designer and say new SharePoint list form and be careful as the dialog box unfolds to check the box on the third screen that says Manage multiple list items. It's unchecked by default. Once you do that, you can have it add several items in one submit.

You can hide the repeating table but it's a little tricky. Master-detail is what you want, but that's not supported in the list forms. You can simulate this but it requires setting a separate value and then conditionally hiding all those children if their parent is not equal to the set value. Easy to do if you've done it before, but a little work if this is your first try. No code required though. Let us know if you want some help.

     Patrick,

Thanks for the response. If I can manage to get the top 4 fields to add to the list for any line items (per submission) every time I would love help to then hide the extra top sections that appear when I click add item (for the line items) at the bottom. Is having the top 4 fields auto populate the same thing for every line item added possible? See below for pictures. The second picture is what happens when I submit currently to SharePoint.

You can see it adds each line item correctly (individually (for parsing reasons is why I have it set this way) but the top fields only populate for the first line item... :(

Hey guys so I tried something different, but still stuck. To get ride of the duplicating tabled in the top section I created a separate list which stores the top info and then a second list which stores the bottom info. I want the ID Clone field on the bottom form, to be the same as the REQ Number at the top (which is the first lists ID field) the ID Clone field is a lookup field, but id rather it copy the data automatically from the REQ number field at the top instead of letting them pick it, is this possible at all? Thanks for any assistance.

(Both forms are in separate webparts on the same list)

Would it be possible to use a workflow to open the second form and push the REQ Number field  to the ID Clone field once it opens? I see how you can change a field in a "current" but not a separate form.

Sorry for basically posting to myself... but just trying to update you on any progress I make. So I finally found a super easy way to do it that might save someone else a headache... I edited the top form submit button to submit using rules and added the send to web part after I submit the form, then in SharePoint I went to the web part of the top form and went to connections, and told it to send data from the ID field (which I have labeled as REQ Number) and push it to ID Clone. Now I only have one issue, and that is it doesn't carry that number to the next line Item when I hit "Insert Item" if anyone can help with this, that would be amazing! See screenshot below, its exciting figuring it out and getting it to work after hours of tampering, I will continue to do so but any insight would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE** - Got the formula and ended up putting "(../preceding-sibling::*)" as the formula in the top field in the column. BUT now when I hit Submit on the top form it doesn't insert the value because the formula in the box is overwriting it?? is there some type of code I can put in front of the formula to stop this?

I'm sorry, I'm struggling to understand what the current issue is. Can you attach the form you are having a problem with to a reply (under the Options tab)?

     Hilary,

I don't think you would be able to open them as they are published to SharePoint lists already...

     Requisition Form = Form 1

    Line Items = Form 2

The issue is that Both forms are in a web part on a list in SharePoint 2010. I have the REQ Number Field pushing its date when I hit submit on Form 1 to the Clone ID field on Form 2.

If I use the "(../preceding-sibling::*)" command it nullifies the "connection" that's pushing the data in field "REQ Number" to form 2s Clone ID field and leaves it blank.

I'm trying to figure out how I can have the data from REQ Number push to Clone ID but then copy that same value to all Clone ID fields for every line I add (every time I click "Insert Item")

Re: Newbie Question for Infopath/SharePoint (need help!)

I figured it out. I pushed data to the other form using webparts data connection, then used the .(../preceding-sibling::(insert field name here)) command to make it replicated to all line items. Using SharePoint Designer 2010 allowed me to map all fields not just 1 by creating a data connection between two different webparts. I hope this helps anyone else who has the same issue.

Next task is to see if I can create a form that will pull all the information that's being gathered on one list and pre-populate a sharepoint doc library form I create so I can send it to vendors (embedded in an email) to fill out prices and hit submit to go to our SharePoint site.

The idea is to have all the same fields as on my form, but have a box at the top (drop down maybe) that says with rules if this box equals "field name here" then pre populate all the data in that row(rows) in the boxes below. I think an issue will arise when I try to do that into a repeating table but we shall see... Ill keep updating here unless no one cares lol.
