populate text box with field from data connection

In SharePoint I have a list that has a column called name and a column called area.
In my InfoPath form I have a dropdown (HSrep) that is populated by a data connection to the list mentioned above. In the data connection I retrieve the name/area/id from the list.

Now, in the form I have a text box and I am trying to populate the value with "area" based on the value selected from the dropdown.
So I click the formula button and select my secondary data connection. I choose area.
I click filter and say where name (secondary connection) = HSrep (main).
The value of the drop down is the email of the person. The display name is  the title. (just to confuse matters, title is the internal name for the column which we have renamed to "name")

Anyways, I preview the form, select a person from the dropdown list and nothing happens. When I open Fiddler I can't even see any activity to suggest it is trying to look up the value.

     Hi there,

I am attaching a word document with steps to set up a rule for this. Add this rule to your email dropdown list.

     Hope this helps!

Thanks but I'm having some trouble making it work. The drop down list below contains names (but the drop down list "values" are the email addresses). The secondary data connection also contains "area" which is what I am trying to populate into the text box shown below.
I think I have set up the rule correctly but nothing happens when I select drop down values.

     Hi Jay,

Is it possible for you to send me your template? I would like to take a look at it.

    Thanks,

Sure, what is the best way? When I select send email or private message (from your profile) neither seem to have an attachment  option.
I have uploaded the template here, let me know if you have a problem accessing it please.

     Hi Jay,

Did you test the same form I attached? Or did you make changes to your form based on the updated form I sent? Sorry, just want to make sure I understand how you are trying to test it. Also, in the post you have mentioned there are 2 cols in your SharePoint list but I see in your form you have 3 cols name, email and area. The drop down list in the form you have attached is referencing the name col in the SharePoint list and in the post you have mentioned the value of the drop down is the email of the person. Please let me know if I am missing something here.

     Thanks,

    Reema

HI Reema, thanks for sticking with this with me.
I saved your template locally, I opened it in InfoPath designer 2013 and previewed it.

I have a list (secondary data connection) and I retrieve name, email and area.
In the HSRep I show name as display but keep email as the value (so I can use this for workflow emails).
When a value (name) is selected from the HSRep dropdown I want to populate the HS_Dept textbox with the area associated with the selected name.

Perhaps the lookup filter is using the email value from the drop down rather than the name value?

     No sorry, still nothing showing.
The rule must be firing because when I select a name from the drop down and then look at the drop down contents again, only the name I selected and a blank selection remain. To get the full list of names back in the drop down I select the blank selection and there they are.
So it would appear that the first part of the rul is assigning the value (already selected) to the drop down.... but still nothing in HS_Dept

Re: populate text box with field from data connection

     Hi Jay,

Create one more data connection exactly same as Health & Safety Reps and use that to populate the values of the drop down list(HSrep) in the form. This should resolve the issue of only one value showing in the list upon selection. Also please try Incident Reporting Form.xsn attached. Please let me know if it works this time. In the previous copy I attached I was not assigning the right value to HS_Dept and that is why it was not working.

    Thanks,

I have created the same scenario on my env and it is working for me. I am not sure why it is not working for you. Did you try adding one more data connection to your form to populate the list values? If you want to share the screen shot of what exactly you see in the preview might help.
