Okay I have found alot of information on here about this however I still cannot figure out what I did wrong here.  I am trying to create an auto number field.  I used the link shown below and when I try to renumber the first form to one it gives me an error.  am I missing something

You'll need to run those rules on your submit. Rules only fire when a field changes, and currently there's not anything changing the field. Additionally, you will want to use the ID field from your queried data source in the secondary RetrieveIDs, not the field in the main.
