    Auto-populate fields from previous form

    I feel like this should be really easy to do... I am creating forms for collecting field data. In a day multiple records can be entered and my field techs will be using the "Insert item" to add additional records. Some of these fields I would like to be auto-populated from the first record. For example if this were the data i was collecting: Date, Observer, Colony, Nest number, Notes, Recorder. The date, observer, colony, and recorder would be the same. The nest number and notes would be the only thing different for each record. Entering 50+ records a day, I am trying to make it easier and would like it to automatically populate future records.

    Hi kgood,

    This is doable, but I'd like to find out how fields are populated? will you be using a dropdown control as basis for the values? if so then you can easily add a data connection to a list or library, set the dropdown control to filter and query the data selected, and set values on the desired fields after querying.

    I hope this makes sense.

    Re: Auto-populate fields from previous form

    I have a formula in the data for today's date. There is a drop down for 'colony' but the 'recorder' and 'observer' are not drop down. I do not want it to be a standard default, for example if I am working in the SS colony today and the WH colony tomorrow, I don't want to have to change the default everyday. I would like when you hit insert form at the bottom, that it populates some of the fields with the data above, such as date, colony, observer, and recorder. Previously we have entered all data into the main database in access, it is easy enough to change a default in access to populate certain fields and that's kinda what I am trying to accomplish in InfoPath. I hope what I am saying makes sense, I really appreciate your help!

    Re: Auto-populate fields from previous form

    Hello,

    Thanks for the clarifications. At the repeating table, add a rule which sets the target field to the value:

    preceding-sibling::my:group2/my:field1

    Where field 1 is that target field and also the target value.

    See attached form for reference (download xsn > right click > open in design). Check the rules on the repeating table and run in preview to test the logic.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks Don, On your sample form if I put in 555 in the first box and when I click insert item, I want the new record to show up with 555 already in that box. Is that possible?

    Yes it should. But the previous form I attached had a different formula. Please try this one instead.

    Yes! That is exactly what I am looking for! Unfortunately I cannot open the form in designer, would you mind attaching a picture or writing the formula? Thank you so much for all your help, I really appreciate it.

    Hi kgood,

    Here's the formula, as mentioned in the previous post:

    preceding-sibling::my:group2/my:field1
