Dropdown inside a repeating row, from a dataconnection and getting repeated identical values

I want to have the following:

a repeating table/seciton that draws from an iSharelist. the user uses a dropdown to pick a record name, then that record's information populates the remaining 3 columns with the corrosponding data. then the option to add another item appears, and repeat process as desired.

For instance: dropdown choose name A gives:

    (dropdown choice)|   (Autofilled)   |    (Autofilled)    |(Autofilled)

    Name Alex            | Alex's Phone | Alex's Location| Alex's age|

I used a rule to filter the other 3 columns based on what is chosen from the first. I've tried this a few ways, the problem seems to stem from how a dropdown is inside a repeating table/section. Ive tried both sections and tables.

My issue is that when I choose this option, a line for every single record in ishare is autogenerated, and each dropdown choice can only use the corrosponding record of the populated data. It's backwards in two ways.

    Example:

    Name:(blank) | Alex's Phone | Alex's Location

    Name (blank) |Bob's Phone | Bob's Location| Bob's age

    Name (blank) | Cynthia's Phone | Cynthia's Location| Cynthia's age

(where Name (blank) dropdown choice only allows for the corrosponding name to those records, first record only allows for alex, and second only for bob and third only for cynthia and so on.)

How should I go about doing this? I tried using formatting rules to take in everything but hide what is not chosen.

     Hello rcl0404,

If I'm understanding the objective of your outcome correctly, you are bringing external data into your form from the SharePoint list, and displaying in the main data source of your form, in a repeating group.  You'll want to set up your repeating section with the dropdown, with a rule on that field to set the value of the other fields to the value from the secondary datasource where your main datasource field = secondary data source field.

    Here's a post that may help: http://www.infopathdev.com/forums/p/27258/94559.aspx#94559

    Hope that helps!

    Thanks,

So you are saying to pull  the secondary source (name in example) into the  main form directly? that is, drag the field from secondary source directly into the form, allow it to automatically make a repeating section around that field, then add fields I create in the Main form? like this?

(secondary source)Name| (Main form)Phone| (Main form) Location| (Main form) Age

When trying to set the dropdown options, i go to use external data source and select Name, I get this error:

"you've selected the field where the Control saves data. instead, select the field where the control looks up data."

Assuming that get sorted, are these the correct next steps:

    rules on Name:

    1. on change, set field "Phone" to isharePhone[Name=Name]

    2. on change, set field "Location" to ishare:Location[Name=Name]

    3. on change, set field "Age" to ishareLocation[Name=Name]

    .

    Hello rcl0404,

You are on the right track! The Name dropdown is in your main data source, but uses data from the Secondary data source. I've attached an example that you can preview to take a look at the logic you will need. In this example, I've used a secondary XML data source so that you are able to preview, but it will work the same with a connection to an external SharePoint list.

Let me know if you need more guidance!

Also, I am unfortunatly unable to download and run files from unknown sources, office policy. Though I do appreciate the file, I'll see if I can examine it at home.

Definitely still having trouble, so I point the dropdown which was made in the Main to the secondary source for choices. Having done that, how do I make it a repeating section or row? if I move it into a repeating section it says "Control cannot repeat here" and running it gives me a row for every person and no choice again, that is it shows everyone A-Z and does not allow for a choice.
