Where do you save your filled out forms? SharePoint? If so, you could get the max ID from the SharePoint library right before you submit the form and increment it by 1 - there is always a risk that two people will end up with the same number, but querying the library right before you submit minimizes that.

    Hello Hillary

    thanks for your response

    i think u missunderstood me

on the infopath form, i have a field called NO:0987

each time a user fills the form they should each have a unique number, this will allow for auditing of each of the forms

Hi, agavoky - I did understand you. I was making a suggestion for how you might accomplish this if your form submit to SharePoint. Do they? Or do they submit to SQL? If not, unique numbering is going to be pretty challenging - and even if they do, it can be hard.

     Hello Hillary

I want to thank u for your assistance thus far.

I want the infopath forms autonumbered before they are saved.

i have a text-box field called autonumber on my infopath form. i have set the default value to 001.

Each time a user opens the form i want the number to change to 002 and so on

    is this possible

No - because you don't have a way to know how many times the template has been opened. You don't know how many filled out forms have been saved.

You'd need to have a way to find out what the number should change to - have 100 forms been filled out? 5? 21? The form logic needs to be able to find that out and set the number accordingly. That's why I have been asking where the filled out forms are submitted.

the filled out forms are submitted to a SharePoint forms library

So - you could query the library, get a count of the forms, and increment it by one, then zero pad it get the next number. The reason I suggest doing this when you submit is to prevent two or more users getting the same number.
