Error opening InfoPath 2010 Filler form from email

I deleted and added new fields to an existing InfoPath 2010 form that sends the form via email.  Now, old forms previously sent cannot be opened.  The follow error is displayed:

InfoPath cannot open the following file:  c:\users\xxxx\appdata\local\microsoft\windows\temporary internet files\content.mso\bef79838.tmp\incidentreport2014-04-15.xml.

The form contains schema validation errors.

    Details are:

Element '{http://schemas.microsoft.com/office/infopath/2003/myXSD/2013-03-01T17:49:44}Category' is unexpected according to content model of parent element '{http://schemas.microsoft.com/office/infopath/2003/myXSD/2013-03-01T17:49:44}myFields'.

    Expecting: {http://schemas.microsoft.com/office/infopath/2003/myXSD/2013-03-01T17:49:44}TypeofPerson, {http://schemas.microsoft.com/off....

How can I resolve this?  These forms are not saved to a SharePoint library and are only emailed.

I've not used Email forms much, but I guess I'd try setting the form template to update existing XML. However, you want to make sure the schema changes you've made won't have unanticipated side effects. Did you delete or move fields? Or just add them?

So - if you set the form template to upgrade existing XML any data entered into the fields you deleted will be deleted. Is that an OK outcome? Here's a post that describes how you can preview your template with an existing XML file - it may help you see what the impacts are: http://www.infopathdev.com/blogs/hilary/archive/2009/03/13/first-do-no-harm.aspx

You'll need to set your template to upgrade existing XML in the Form Options > Versioning setting, then you can preview with an existing XML file to see what happens.
