Error Message: file won't open in SharePoint... msxsl, number, substring

     Hello,

I added a Rule to hide a section in my form and typed the wrong formula... and now the forms in SharePoint won't open. I have deleted all the Rules with the wrong formula and have published it multiple times.. however the following message still shows.

Do you know how I can fix the problem or how to revert to an earlier version?

    Thank you!!

    Form template: http://ishareteam1.na.xom.com/sites/chemmpr4/EMCAPS4/Staff%20Contractor%20Request/Forms.xsn

InfoPath cannot open the following view: View 1

The following view file is not valid: view1.xsl

The .xsl file is not valid XSL.

    Invalid number of arguments.

    not((msxsl:string-compare(-->number(substring(../my:ResourceData/my:Proposal1/my:FileName, 1, 8), "20140000")<--) > 0 and msxsl:string-compare(number(substring(../my:ResourceData/my:Proposal1/my:FileName, 1, 8), "20140902")) < 0) or (../my:signatures1/my:signatures9 = ""))

So - you removed the bad rule, but it sounds like maybe a cached version of the template with the bad rule is trying to open. Remove the form from the cache - in IP 2010 and 2013, open InfoPath filler and go to the File / New backstage. Find the form. Right click and select Get update - if that doesn't fix it, remove it and try opening again from the published location.

     Hello Hilary,

Thank you so much for your reply! This is my first time creating a form using InfoPath and linking it to SharePoint. Can you explain how to get to IP 2010 and 2013? Thanks!

I'm sorry, I should have been more clear - I meant if you are using InfoPath 2010 or InfoPath 2013. Do you know what version of InfoPath you are using?

     Hi Hilary,

I am using InfoPath 2010. I've always used InfoPath 2010 - did not switch versions while this error occurred.

Okay.. I looked up InfoPath filler.. I went into the InfoPath filler.. downloaded the bad form to my desktop... tried to open it using the filler.. it won't open.. I get the same error message. How do I update the form in the Filler? Thank you.

Open InfoPath Filler. Go to the File Menu. Select New. Find the template that has been giving you issues. Right click and select Remove. Go to SharePoint and try clicking New Document.

When I talked about "versions" I meant versions of the template. Not versions of InfoPath. :)

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!!! I removed all the templates cause I'm not sure which one is causing the problems. Now all the files open from SharePoint! :)

Can you explain how the template in the Filler is related to the file on SharePoint? I'm not quite understanding the connection of how it got fixed... Thanks!

Re: Error Message: file won't open in SharePoint... msxsl, number, substring

InfoPath downloads and "caches" templates when you open them from the published location - that is so that the template can open more quickly in the future. When it opens a template, it checks the version of the template to see if there is an upgrade published, and if there is, in InfoPath 2010 and 2013, it shows a yellow bar across the top of the form asking if you want to update (depending on versioning settings in the template).

So - in this case, you published a version that was broken. You tried to open the broken version and it was cached. Then when you tried to open a new one, after updating the template - InfoPath was trying to open the cached, broken version. Does that make sense?
