Silent auction - populating field with highest amount

Hi I'm building an infopath form which will be used for a silent auction. The form will have several sections each with a description of the bid item and also a field where the user will be able to input the amount they wish to bid. if possible I would like a read only field to display the current highest bid underneath where the user inputs their bid. .. This field will point to the relevant sharepoint list column and hopefully find the current highest amount. I'm struggling to get this to work - mainly due to the formula or rule that I need to input on the read only field. I've set up the data connection to point to the list and selected all the columns that should be available - so I think that bit is ok. Can anyone share something similar that has been created or point me in the right direction on the formula/rule. Thanks R

What you want is to add a calculated value control and enter a formula that calculates the maximum value in the Bid column in your sharepoint list, filtered to include only Bids for the current Item (I'm assuming that you also have an Item column in your list that is used to distinguish between different items).  That formula will look something like this:

     max(SharePointList/BidColumn[SharePointList/ItemColumn=CurrentItem])

Where CurrentItem is the value of the item the user is looking at. Use a calculated value control because it isn't user editable, so it will display the max but the user can't type over the max value.
