need to autocheck a box based on a value that uses a data connection to determine result

I have a form that has a data connection to another list that I use for Vendor Names and other information.  In that list, some of the entries are marked with a yes - if they qualify for a self assessed sales tax. What I need is when, in my form, a vendor is selected from my drop down list that is using a data connection to populate that drop down, to automatically check a box if that vendor is marked to use that sales tax.  I have set up two other rules on this one field that work perfect but those are values, not a checkbox, so I don't know what I am doing wrong with my logic for the checkbox rule.

My rule is this:  set a fields value - checkbox field - and then a formula for the value.  The formula selects the field in my secondary data connection and then I filter that field to be that secondary field is equal to True.

    I am using InfoPath 2013.

Why not set the default value on your checkbox equal to the value of SalesTax filtered so that Vendor = the vendor selected in the dropdown?  Something like this:

     SharePointList/SalesTax[SharePointList/Vendor = VendorFromDropdown]
