    Enterprise Search Inquiry

I have declared a search scope which is limited to 3 site collections on the search scope settings, set the rules and target results page. I have set up an enterprise search center page where the results will be displayed. Initially, it returns the right results which covers the keyword within the 3 site collections. As I search again  and click the search button in enterprise search it doesn’t follow the rules anymore. Can i ask a  recommendation for this?

    Hi Jen,

You may need to add a rule on your search button to clear all query fields first before assigning query values so that the field will not retain previous search values. Please let me know if this helps.

Thank you for the response donstephen. However, i am not sure on how to clear the values in enterprise search center page. Can you guide me on how to do it?

I  have used the default sharepoint enterprise search center site as my search page.

     Hi Jen,

When searching for values from a SharePoint site, queryFields are populated with desired values in order for dataFields to return target values. However, if you search for items again, the data on the queryFields are retained. You will need to clear all the fields at the queryFields group before searching again. In other words, set all these fields to blank.

Your button's rules should be something like:

    Clear Query fields
    Set Query fields
    Query SharePoint

This way, values from previous searches will not be retained at the query fields. Hope this makes sense.

I see, well understood. Thank you very much donstephen. In line with this, are there limitations on the number of data connections i can query in one form?

    Hi Jen,

I do not think that there are limitations with regards to the number of data connections you could query. However, what you should take into consideration is your form's performance. The more items you query, your form's performance suffers. So it's not just the number of data connections, but also the number of items you are dealing with. And if by somehow you go way beyond the limit of a SharePoint storage, let's say ten thousand rows, the most scalable solution is to use a database. And here we can use a BCS or Web Service to pull data. But if you don’t want to create your own webservice, you can use Querydb, you can download our free Web service trial for that. Hope this helps.

Thank you very much. Really appreciate your help on this.

So far, i have managed to limit the data connection due to form's performance since it was also designed as browser infopath form. But moving forward, i will explore more on using the web service because i am not yet sure on how to use it.
