Showing image from image library in InfoPath Filler form (sometimes)

    Hi,

I have a picture control bound to a field that gets set to the location of a PNG image in an image library. It only works a little and I wonder if anyone knows how to make it work better. Specifically:

    • On SP 2010 the picture does not show before the form is submitted, but does show if the form is submitted to the same site as the image library and then re-opened in InfoPath filler.
    • On Office 365 the picture never shows in the form.

    Any insight or suggestions appreciated.

    Glen

Hey, Glen - so the picture control is set to display a link and the field is set to the URL of your PNG file? You are opening your form from SharePoint? I don't have time today to repro this, but I can try on Monday and at least verify if I have the same issues. :)

So - how are you setting this field? I tried this with a default value and in SP 2010, my published form showed the picture as soon as opened - didn't have to submit first. So, I tried the same thing in Office 365 - again, no issue. My image showed up just fine.

Are you using a default value? Or are you setting the field via a rule or something? Have you put the field on your form so you can verify the value? If you want me to take a quick look at your form, feel free to attach it under the Options tab...

     Hi Hilary,

Thanks for responding. XSN attached. The URL for the image is constructed by a rule. I know the URL is good because it works for a hyperlink in the other column of the repeating table. Have I missed something?

You might be interested in what I'm trying to do with this form. Our customers frequently want to include more photos in a form than is workable. I'm trying to make a good solution for uploading a large number of photos one at a time using the imaging.asmx web service. The goal is to have the form itself show links and linked thumbnails of the photos, but not have the actual images embedded in the xml. First I'm telling the web service what to name the uploaded file, then I'm using that same info to construct a URL pointing to the file I just uploaded.

This could become the new best way to 'attach' photos to forms.

I didn't see any rules setting the Thumbnail field - I do see it has a default value. I also in the rule inspector didn't see anything setting the Hyperlink field. Am I missing something here?

I guess what I'd do is put the Thumbnail field on the form again, as a text box, so you can verify the URL it is getting set to. Like I said - this behavior didn't reproduce for me in a test form (using a default, non-calculated value for my picture URL). If you just open the form as it is, with the default URL you currently have in the Thumbnail field, do you see the pic?

Feel free to email it to me if it is something you'd rather not post in a public forum. :)
