Items in text box to populate dropdown

    Hi,

I'm not sure if this is possible,  but if I have a text box with items like this:

    Item 1;  Item 2,  Item 3

Is there a way to populate a dropdown with those items?

    Hello,

Yes, it is possible by having another field containing the concatenated values of the items. On the sample I am attaching, the items should be inserted onto a repeating table in order to have the values displayed on the drop-down list. Hope this helps.

Re: Items in text box to populate dropdown

     Hi,

This is close to what I need,  but not quite all the way.
It goes along with my request here:

The text box in that question is for the end user to easily see what they checked in the confirmation screen.

But I'm also going to have an admin area, where we assign owners to each item that is checked.
There will be a repeating table.  In the repeating table,  there will be a dropdown that will display as options whatever was checked in the checkboxes.

My goal is to list an owner,  and then select an option from the dropdown to assign them the project.

Can the lookup be done using the checkboxes on the form,  instead of the text box?

does anyone have any ideas how to make this work?

Either using the text box that stores all the selections like this

     item 1, item 2, item 3

So that would make a dropdown with 3 options

    Item 1
    Item 2
    Item 3

Or going directly to the checkboxes and scanning which ones are checked and doing the same thing

    Item 1
    Item 2
    Item 3

    Thanks!

Thank you for the additional information. Please check if this sample form is closer to what you're looking for.

Re: Items in text box to populate dropdown

     Thanks,

This is getting very close,  but the problem I see in my situation would be the repeating table.

It appears looking at the example,  that the dropdown is looking at the repeating table to get it's values.

The problem I'm seeing is,  on my form we actually have 3 sections of checkboxes,  that I was hoping to use to populate the dropdown.    Is it possible to do this without the repeating table?  or if the repeating table is necessary,  can the dropdown look at multiple repeating tables?

I'm currently not using any repeating table for our checkboxes, since it limits the formatting of the form.   Would it help if I attached a sample of our form?

Unfortunately, a repeating table is required in order to have the items displayed on the drop-down list. Please check this updated form sample for the approach I used in order to segregate the sections using a formatting rule, which hides a row if a condition is met.

Re: Items in text box to populate dropdown

    hmm,

I think I can make this work,  but I'm looking at it and can't figure out how it actually works :)
In the repeating table,  how do you get Item 1, Item 2, Item 3 etc, to appear when you preview the form?   I'm trying to figure out how you add more?

I see on Field 1,  the default value is 'Item 1'   but how do you get 'Item 2' and on to appear in the correct places?

Currently on my form,  we have 2 sections with about 25 different checkboxes.    Your method appears it would eliminate all of those individual checkbox fields in the form.

Could you explain how it all works?

     Thanks Again!

Re: Items in text box to populate dropdown

In InfoPath 2010, under the data tab, click Default Values. Expand the repeating table and enter the default values for each intance of the item you wish to display. So in this sample, I used field1 for the items (item 1, item 2, item 3, etc.), field2 is for the checkbox, and  field3 (A, B) is used for the value to segregate the rows. See image below:

To add more items, click on the repeating group (in this case group2) and select Add another group below.

If you check field3, it will either contain A or B (those are the values I selected so that each row will have a distinctive value).

To hide those rows, add a formatting rule to the repeating table. See image below:

Re: Items in text box to populate dropdown

     Thanks!

I've got it working in the dropdown,  but for some reason I'm running into problems with having it fill the text box.

It keeps saying that the field within the concat is not valid.    I've copied your code over,  and replaced the fields with my own,  and it just won't work.   I've been browsing to the field I need to concat,  and InfoPath adds it to the formula.   Just not sure what is wrong.

Is there a trick to that piece?

Even in your example,  if I create a new text box and put the exact same default value in it.   I can't get it to populate like yours,  is there some other piece that I'm missing that triggers this?
I don't get the error,  it just doesn't populate at all.

     Thanks!

Here is your first form,  where I've added a text box and applied I think the same default value,  but it doesn't update.

Is there something else I need to do?

Re: Items in text box to populate dropdown

Upon checking the form, I was able to notice that the formula holds the value "True" with a capital letter T, while the checkbox displays these values as "true" with small letters. After updating the formula, the form seemed to check out properly.

Wow can't believe I missed that.

    That fixed it.

    Thank You
