checkbox control is disabled no matter what

    Using IP 2007.

I have a simple checkbox on my form that I would like to populate based on conditions of other values in form but that is not working.

In the meantime I discovered the checkbox is disabled in preview mode - it disregards default value and is blank. I cannot check it if default is set to unchecked, and if default is set to checked, it becomes deselected in preview mode.  The checkbox  is disabled despite no rules or conditions set upon it as of yet.  The view it lives on was read-only but I changed that to active so all controls should be available.  What am I missing?

Re: checkbox control is disabled no matter what

This issue is very perplexing and preventing me from going forward with update to form template.  To test what is happening, I moved controls to other areas of form where I am position there is not read-only settings in place.

I went so far as to create a new view, and create a new checkbox directly on the canvas (no section controls or tables used), accepting default (cleared, TRUE/FALSE).  In Preview mode, the checkbox is disabled!

I have user roles in place, and I am logged on as a user who has permission (and in which I am Previewing) but this shouldn't matter because I am not restricting anyone from access to a control on this view if they can get to it..

The form template uses DBXL and qRules.  Could something there be preventing me from using these type of controls?  It doesn't happen with textbox control.

Can someone help - It's probably something simple I overlooked but everything I try doesn't work.

My guess is that for some reason the field that the checkbox is bound to is not included by default in the XML. You can check on the defaults under Tools > Default Values (I think, sorry, no IP 2007 around) or just attach under the Options tab if you want me to take a look.

Re: checkbox control is disabled no matter what

The view (called Debug) which these controls are on was not checked in default values but checking it did not make a change in its behavior during Preview mode, therefore I'm attaching the form.  Please delete the attachment from my post as I don't want the form to be public.  Thank you.

p.s. I created a view called testing with one checkbox control (field4) where it also doesn't behave correctly.  The controls I'm trying to "control" (lol) are cbShowSafetySection and rdoShowSafetySection.

p.s.s. btw I am not updating this template in the DAT tool yet because I don't want to effect existing forms on our production server.  Would that make a difference?

Update: after I did all that I tried a different tactic: On my open behavior rules I was fetching an existing record to test.  After I disable this rule, when I Preview the controls work! So apparently this was preventing access to Debug view controls, but why?

That is good discovery but the purpose of this control is to determine whether a form previosuly existed (i.e. was filled out and submitted already)  before a certain date or is new.  If it's a new form, hide the Safety section and count appropriate items and calculate new averageOverallRating but if it exists before a certain date, do not hide the section and retain previous calculations for averageOverallRating.

Your update was the clue to the issue. Under Form Options > Versioning, the template is set to Do Nothing, so new fields are not being added when you open an existing XML.

Ok I see what you mean. Thank you!

I have a question before I change the versioning.  Will this change affect or update the  template  on the web service (DBXL)? Because I don't want it too, at least not until after I've tested it to make sure its behaving correctly.

As long as you don't overwrite the template in DBXL it won't change it.

    Thank you Hilary!

Please don't forget to delete my previous attachment.

UPDATE _ Ooops, that did not fix the problem!

So - when you preview with existing data and your template is set to automatically upgrade the XML, your new field is still not included?

Can you attach an XML file I can try the template with so I can verify it also fails for me?

I assume you want me to open the cab file, extract the template.xml?  If so, it's attached.

Update: Oh, shoot, you mean an existing xml so you can capture all the data don't you?  I'll email it to you as it contains confidential information.

I can see in the template.xml that field4 isn't included in the template you cracked open for that template.xml file, however. :)

I did make some changes to the first template I sent you, namely eliminating that extra view and field4.
