If I download an XML from my form library and then right click and open from my desktop or whatever folder I saved it to, where does it get the form template (xsn) it uses? We plan to move our xml files off to permanent storage and delete the project from SharePoint and I am not sure how the forms will open after the project site is deleted.  I am especially concerned about these old xml files if I change the form in the future and use it in new libraries.

 Open your XML in a text editor like Notepad. Toward the top you'll see an href attribute - that is the location of the template the XML will use to open with.

 I'm sorry, my previous reply was a little terse - that href can be modified to direct the XML to another template if so desired - if you need to be able to open the XML with the existing template, you can simply leave it in its current location. I think we also have a tool that can be used to adjust the href after the fact, in case you want to archive a copy of the XSN with the XML - if you are interested in that approach, I can follow up on that. :)
