Dynamic Multi-select List Box - writing values to repeating table OR separate text fields (1 value per field)

    Hello,

I have found many posts in this forum that are almost what I am trying to do, but so far I am unable to apply what I have read to my challenge, and I am stuck.  I am hoping someone can help!

I have a multi-select list box populated by a secondary data source, filtered by a user's selection in another field.  Utlimately, I need to perform a look-up elsewhere on each item the user selects from the multi-select list box.  My thoughts for doing this are to write the selected values to a repeating table or another set of fields and then perform the look-up from that field (the look-up is a repeating table, retrieiving an unknown number of results based on the value.)

How can I retrieve the selected values from the list box to have them populate to another set of fields?  I have figured out how to do this when I have a static source for the list box options, but in my scenario, the number of options could vary from 2 to 20 or more.

I hope my question makes sense.  Please let me know if I can further clarify.  I am relatively new to InfoPath, and particularly new to trying to use any type of coding with InfoPath, but I've struggled through a few scenarious successfully so far.

Turns out getting the selections to a repeating table was quite easy.  All I had to do was drag the repeating field to another section and choose repeating table.  (I'm always trying to make things more complicated than necessary...aye.)

What I am really stuck with is the look-up part once I have retrieved those values.

I want to use the same secondary data source that populated the list box as a repeating table within that repeating table, and filter or hide rows where the IDs do not match.  I have googled and searched this forum for days, and am not having any luck with anything but almost-solutions.

I have found how to have the repeating table within the repeating table populate on one entry, but not on more than one, but only was able to do that when I was having the user populate the first field manually.

Here is a simplified version of what I am trying to do:

My other thought if I cannot get the nested repeated table part down was to try to write the values from the MSLB to a series of text fields where I would simply hide any un-used text fields.

I was able to create a single text box and use a double eval with concat to find the selected values, and thought from there I could find a way to parce out each individual entry to its own text box, but I just don't have enough working knowledge of text functions to get very far down that road, either.  I have a feeling I'm simply trying to take on a bit too much with my limited knowledge, but, well, that's kind of my style....

Do you mind attaching your sample form to a reply? Under the options tab... I'm having a little trouble understanding the scenario, and I think seeing your form would help me get it.

Thank you for your response, Hilary!

Here is a simplified version with some sample data included.

Thanks for the sample - I get what you are trying to do now. I'll see if I can come up with some ideas - may be late today before I have a chance, though. :)

Thank you so much!  I surely appreciate any time you would be willing to lend to my issue.

I've come up with a workaround for in the meantime that will at least partially work, but it really takes away from the overall functionality and use of the form.  Instead of using a repeating section or table to contain the name and nested table, I set up individual sections and simply hid the unused ones.  This is annoying because I have to manually create each section and will have to limit users to how many selections they can make per form, which they won't like.  I am also back to having the user manually choose the names to perform the workgroup lookup on with a drop-down, which isn't too terribly awful, it's just not as quick and easy as the way I would rather do it.

Looking forward to seeing if anyone can help with getting my original idea to work before I deploy; it would go over much better with my audience!

Save the attached form locally and then right click and select design - from there you can look at it and preview. What I did was change the section where you were wanting to display just the work groups for the CSR - it is all bound to the SharePoint List data source now. I added some XPath conditions to hide things so that the CSR name is only displayed one time and the work groups for the CSR are displayed in a cell next to the CSR name - take a look & let me know if this was what you were trying to do.

Yes!  That is precisely what I was trying to do!  I am so grateful for your help, I never would have figured that out!  I can't thank you enough!

Now to just figure out how to apply the same concept in my much longer version...  But, I think, thanks to your video tutorials on XPath and your example, I should be okay from here  :)

Sorry to revive an old thread, but im trying to do exactly this. I can't really tell what the solution was from reading the thread.

    Can anyone help with this?
