Update form library columns without form submit?

Once a form is submitted to the SP library, users need to open the form and update some promoted columns.  Sometimes multiple users are doing this at the same time, so when they make updates and resubmit they are overwriting each others work.

I'm trying to build a submit-like button but instead of resubmitting the entire form I just want to directly update a few specific promoted column values in the library.

I looked into InfoPathToSharePointList but the Tool only shows me lists, not libraries.  I am using InfoPath 2010.

    Does anyone have ideas?

    Hi Eric-

We have qRules users who have reported being able to do this, that is, update the value of columns in a form library using SubmitToSharePointList. See here: http://www.infopathdev.com/forums/t/25681.aspx. However, it's not a scenario we've tested or documented. Wouldn't users continue overwriting each other's work if this is implemented?

One option might be to implement a lock/unlock mechanism to ensure users won't overwrite each other's work.

     Hi Ernesto,

Thanks for the insight.  I think the SubmitToSharePointList workaround is what I need.  We will work on proving the concept in the next few days.

The entire issue revolves around concurrent enrichment steps in our workflow.  After the form is submitted the SPD workflow sends emails asking multiple users update their respective fields/columns in the form.  If users open and resubmit the form with their updates at the same time, they might overwrite the others work depending on the timing.

The locking mechanism could help but it negates the benefit of a concurrent workflow.  I'm sure you can understand the frustration of users if they are stopped because the form is locked.

I've done something similar to the locking mechanism where I query the library just before submit to make sure the column values still match the form values so I can prevent the submit if an update was made since the form was opened.  But again we would prefer not to have to stop a user from doing their work because of someone else jumping in.  So that's why it would be ideal if I could simply replace the full resubmit action with a column specific update instead.

I've updated my mapping file for SubmitToSharePointList to point to my library.  I have converted the connection files to the DCL and approved them.

It works great in Filler but does nothing in the Browser (Admin deploy, full-trust).

I dropped the qdabra results on the view, the command line shows my command when I click the button, results is blank, errors is blank, the complete indicator does not change.

Any idea on what I'm missing to get the command to fire in the browser?

I've tried setting @usewebservices to both true and false.

Set post back on your button to Always under the control's properties on the browser tab - see if that resolves the issue.

D'oh!  Everytime!  We are in business now.  Thanks!
