Need to add additional field to the Main data source

I have created a fairly complex infopath form which is attached to a form library. I created the form in 2007 and have since upgraded to 2010. I have 2 columns in my library that I would like to make available in the main data source so I can set their value after some rules I created. Is there a way to add indivual fields to the main data source or is my only option to choose the Refresh option. When I choose this it brings in all the columns in the form library and breaks all the links that I have set up in the form. I only need two additional fields from my library columns available in the main data source so I can update those items based on rules in the form. I am on SharePoint 2010 Enterprise using InfoPath 2010. Any help is very much appreciated!

    Hi CollinCC,

Refresh option? Isn't this a receive data connection? Just go to data connections and click Modify, walk through the wizard and select the new columns. Make sure you don't change the name of the connection towards the end and it won't break the bindings.

If this isn't a secondary data source, I am lost. You can add fields to your form and promote them from the Form Options dialog (under Promoted Properties), but the old forms won't have the data in those columns. At any rate, if you're querying the library to get a list of forms with columns, then that's a receive data connection and the modify should do the trick without causing a bunch of rework.

    Good luck!

Re: Need to add additional field to the Main data source

Patrick, Thank you very much for the response. I am trying to update (change the value) of 2 existing columns in my form library based on rules that 'Set a fields value'. But I can't set the value because the field (form library column) it is not available as an option in the Main submit form data field. I have tried setting up a secondary data source but as you noted it is just a recieve data connection so it won't update fields after submit in the form library column. When I tried that it put a little @ sign in front of the column name and never updated the field after submit. I've got over 100 columns in my form library and only about 50 are available in the main data source on the form. I just want to add 2 existing columns to the Main submit data fields list. If I can't do that than I think my only option is to: 1. make a copy of the 2 columns (temp columns) 2. copy all the data over to the new temp columns 3. delete the original columns 4. Create new fields on the form (same name as the original 2 I just deleted) 5. Publish the form (fields now available in the main submit and in the library) 6. Promote the fields (so I can manipulate them in the library) 7. copy all the data over from the 2 temporary columns 8. update my rules 'Set field's value:' now that I can see/use the columns What do you think? Sometimes SP doesn't make it easy?! Thanks again for any help or advice you can give

I think that makes sense but let us know if you can't get something to work. I am doing the weekly webinar this Thursday and I am happy to review your form in the online webinar after the regular webinar time.
