Glitch in SharePoint alerts for new InfoPath forms

My employer is in the process of upgrading from Windows XP and Office 2003 to Windows 7 and Office 2010. We have a 2003 form that submits to a SharePoint library. SharePoint alerts are functioning as our approval process for the forms. When a user who has the upgraded system submits the form, the new item alert displays only the SharePoint calculated columns. When the InfoPath columns update for a new item it is showing that those columns were changed when it is actually a new item. This is throwing off our workflow. Is there a way to fix this glitch? Thanks.

    Hi JBoyce2 and welcome,

Not sure I understand your scenario. Are you getting 2 alerts? The SharePoint alert stuff is totally independent of InfoPath. InfoPath promoted properties should be written before the alert.

Maybe there's a glitch as you say.

One easy fix would be to turn off alerts and add a reusable workflow that sends an email. After all, you have SharePoint 2010 now, right?

If I missed something, I'm sorry. Please post again with more detail.

Correct, we are receiving two alerts when a new item is created. The first alert says "item added" and only contains the SharePoint calculated column information. The second alert shows that the InfoPath columns and says that they have been changed--all on a new item submit.

We are using SharePoint Library views to in conjunction with the alerts, so that if someone is in a certain Line of Business and they receive a form from that LOB then they get an alert and process. The alert situation above is causing the initial alert email (without the InfoPath LOB information) to be sent to all Lines of Business which is confusing our folks.

The alerts seem to be more flexible than workflows and have been working great before the upgrade to Office 2010. I appreciate your help on this, though it seems to be a unique situation.

    I'm not sure.

Alerts don't give you the ability to set conditions. At least with workflow you can condition whether you send a notification. You can include a link in the email notification so it functions like alerts.

We haven't really used alerts in a while. Sorry, I don't know why this is happening.
