    Query Builder Error

Hi again, we're trying out DBXL on a trial basis, but we can't get Query Builder to work for us. We've edited the web.config per the training video and user guide, but when attempting to use Query Builder we get the message:

"An error occurred trying to refresh the database description: Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

This happens regardless of entering the connection string details manually into query builder, or using the alias as defined in the web.config

Just saw this recently! Make sure the service account that DBXL runs under has read permissions to the database you are trying to use QueryBuilder for...

Hi Hilary, yes, the account does have access, and is hard-coded into the connection string. Any other ideas?

Can you try querying the QdabraSamples alias? Just to see if you get the same error?

I have tested the web service by calling the AD integration and it worked well, so DBXL is up and running.

Here's the response when querying the sample alias:

An error occured trying to refresh the database description: The query cannot be run for the following DataObject: DescribeDatabaseSchemaFromDatabaseName

InfoPath cannot run the specified query.
The SOAP response indicates that an error occured on the server:

System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException: Server was unable to process request. ---> Qdabra.QueryDB.QueryDBException: Error D0003:

The Database alias QdabraSamples was not found in web.config

    at Qdabra.QueryDBService.GetConnectionString(String database, Boolean&isDbxlDb)

If you look in the web config, do you see an entry for QdabraSamples?

Yes it's there, as well as the default server line that it references.

Under the Options tab in a reply, can you add a screenshot of what you have entered in the fields in Query Builder prior to getting this error?

Thanks - and a screen shot of the relevant parts of the web config? I'm going to forward a link to this thread to our support team.

    Here it is.

Some additional testing I did with the TestConnectionString service revealed that the connection string to the database resolves correctly, so I pasted it straight from the web.config into Query Builder. Also the QdabraSamples now works after resetting IIS a couple of times.

Without the Initial Catalog value set, the form worked, but it retrieved database system level values to the Table Name drop-down, not the table values I was looking for.

Setting the Initial Catalog to the test database re-produced the error I was hitting before. We've double checked and even dropped and re-granted permissions for the service account on the views/tables on that database that it should be able to access without success.

Does the account need to have full access to the entire database for this to work?

I don't know if we've tested with permissions to only tables and views - I'll check w/ the test team.

The Service account is also a domain account, not a local account on the SQL box, does this affect the configuration?

I will create a support ticket and contact you via email to investigate further.
