InfoPath Dev

we have a form with 4 views. On view 1, I want to be able to display the summary results from calculations performed on View 4, when they exist, but when View 4 is not used, I want to allow the users to enter their own values onto View 1.
When I set the default value on View 1 equal to the node on View 4, the value I manually enter to override the default gets lost when I save and reopen the form.
I tried adding a rule to set the value on View 1, but it does not seem to get executed when the data on View 4 changes.
Any suggestions?

There is a check box that says whether the default value formula gets updated every time... you might just need to uncheck this.
