Issue updating xsn files on local computer

    Hello Everyone !

I am facing an issue while updating the xsn files on a local computer.

I am writing an application which runs on the user's computer. It uses few xsn templates to allow the user to fill in some Infopath forms. Those xsn are copied in a specific directory when the msi of the Application is launched.

The issue comes when updating those xsn. To update them, we have made a new msi that overwrites the old version of the xsn files with the new one. Everything seems fine until a xml file is double clicked. The file is opened with the old xsn. The new one has to be double clicked to be used by InfoPath when opening an xml file.

My question is : how to avoid to have the user to double click each new xsn file ?

By the way, the xsn are first published on my development machine in a local directory. When the msi of my application is generated, they are taken from this folder.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Yann.

It sounds like you have created an MSI which publishes the XSN to a specific folder on the user's machine which matches the folder structure on your machine.

    1) Are you sure that you are exactly overwriting the previously installed XSN?
    2) Double-check that the version number of the new XSNs is incrementing. This should happen automatically when you make changes in designer and resave/republish to your local machine location. The setting is in the Tools::Form Options dialog. If the updated XSN isn't a higher version number it may not get picked up by InfoPath when just opening XML files.

    Hi Chiraz,
    Thanks for you answer.

    1) Yes I am sure I overwrite the previously installed xsn.
    2) And the version number of my xsn files automically increments.

So far, I didn't find a solution to my issue.

After overwriting the XSN, do you close all instances of InfoPath and then try to open the form to get the new version?

When I update the xsn, all the Infopath instances are closed. And then why I open a xml file, this is the previous version of the xsn that shows up.

    Hey,

Have you tried clearing the InfoPath form cache?

    Hey,

From the command prompt on the user's PC (Start/Run prompt):
    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\INFOPATH.EXE" /cache clearall

Or you can do the same from code within InfoPath but the form needs to be fully trusted (code is VBScript in a button's OnClick event):

    Dim wshShell
    Dim sRun, sParam, sMsg

    sParam = "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\INFOPATH.EXE /cache clearall"
    Set wshShell = Createobject("WScript.Shell")

    wshShell.Exec sParam

    Set wshShell = Nothing

    Thanks mbenbow.

I am going to test this, and if it works I will run this command on the first launch of any version of my project.
