Mass Update existing Infopath XML files

I have an issue where a client has a Form Library that has over 1000 existing Infopath forms.  The client has requested a new field be added to the form that will be published to the Library.  This field is a calculation based on other fields within the form.  My issue is that on new forms or any form that is opened and submitted, the value shows up as expected, but the existing forms that this process has not been completed are still not showing these values.

Is there a simple way to update the existing forms?

At this point I'm seeing my options as the following:

    • Manually open and submit all existing forms.  Not ideal as there are over 1000 items so this will be very time consuming, plus there will be a new version for each that shows that I (or whoever submits them) modified them
    • Write some code to  update each XML file based on those fields.  I would image that this will also show a new version for each, but at least it should be an automated process.

Are there any other ways that I'm not aware of to accomplish this?

I'd take the second option, personally. And yes, this will show a new version for each and that you (or whatever account the code runs under) updated each - and I don't think there is a way around that - I don't think Modified By can be overwritten, although you may want to check around on that - see if you can change it to not read only and then set the value to whatever it was when you grabbed the XML....

    Hi Jason,

Qdabra's Document Migration tool will batch convert XML based on an XSLT so you could use that and not have to write any code. Well, XSLT is pretty close to code, but you don't need visual Studio.

Let us know if we can help.

    Best regards,

    Patrick
