I am trying to set up the following:

1. I have a drop down field that lets the user select a "Release Number" from a drop down list that is using a lookup to an external list.

2. I want to create a rule that will result in displaying related information that is also in the same lookup list as the Release Number. So for example when the user selects the Release Number, I want to display the related Release Date.

3. Currently what is NOT working is I have a rule that has a condition = When Release Number is not blank and I have a rule type of Action = set a field's value... but I cannot figure out what formula will result in displaying the Release Date related to the Release Number.

When using Set a field's value, there's an option to Filter Data, and this is what you want to use. You want to set up this filter so that that the Release Number in the dropdown = the Release Number in the external list.
