GetUserProfileByName - Opens in Client but not in Web Based Form

I've seen similar posts, but very few answers and mostly guesses.   I have a InfoPath 2010 form trying to populate the username, manager, spending limit... it works great in preview mode in the client application but errors out when published and trying to open in a browser.

Using SharePoint 2010, IP 2010.   got it to work fine in MOSS.

I've attached a screenshot of the erorr and the form.   If there is any other information i can provide, please let me know.

I posted the exact issue earlier today in the Data Connections forum.  It'll be interesting to see what comes back.

    Hi Tom and ClayDevin,

I responded to Tom's other thread with a suggestion to convert the data connection to a UDC, but the definitive answer is to look up the error (by correlation ID) in the SharePoint logs since it will contain much more information about the root cause.

Here's a tool you can install to easily view the errors: http://ulsviewer.codeplex.com/

Let us know what you find and we'll decode it if it isn't totally obvious. :)

    Good luck!

Thanks for that ULSIEWER, what a big help.   We converted everything to data connection strings.    Odd thing is that Get Common Manager errors out and Get UserProfile Service doesnt error, but doesnt populate.

These are the errors we are receiving:

    1.   Data adapter failed during OnLoad: The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized.

    2.

The following query failed: GetCommonManager (User: DOMAIN\Devin.herring, Form Name: Expense2010, IP: , Connection Target: , Request: http://DOMAIN.xxx.com/_layouts/FormServer.aspx?XsnLocation=http://DOMAIN.xxx.com/forms/Expense2010/Forms/template.xsn&SaveLocation=http://DOMAIN.xxx.com/forms/Expense2010&Source=http://DOMAIN.xxx.com/forms/Expense2010/Forms/AllItems.aspx&DefaultItemOpen=1, Form ID: urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:infopath:Expense2010:-myXSD-2010-02-23T22-47-50 Type: DataAdapterException, Exception Message: The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized. The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized.)

Hi claydevin, I had a very similar issue, almost exactly the same, and I found the solution at this link:  http://gordonduthie.net/2011/01/26/sharepoint-2010-claims-based-security-infopath-data-connections-and-getuserprofilebyname/.

It appears that it's a claims based authentication issue for browser based forms using SOAP web services.  All the steps are in the thread, but bottom line is a two step process.  Convert your data connection to GetUserProfileByName to a UDCX connection, then associate it with a Secure Server target application on SharePoint.  We're using a service account for the login credentials, making sure the service account has sufficient permissions.  This should satisfy any security concerns.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks for the heads up!

We ended up getting it to work by converting all connections to UDCX and posting the data connections to Cenral Admin.   We THINK that worked.   Thanks for all the feedback!

     Hi there

I have converted my udcx file to use the secure store service account but I still get the 401 error. How can I tell if the form is using the credentials of the secure store target ID?

Can you tell me what you mean by "sufficient permissions"?

    Thanks
