Help getting started with the Check In/Out feature

I am a little confused on what to do to implement the new Check In/Out feature I just purchased from Qdabra.  The included instructions take you through the steps of how to create a xtp and udc but there were xtp2 and udc files that downloaded with the product I downloaded, so do I need to follow these instructions to create new ones?  Or can I just use the ones provided with the product download....and if I can just use the ones provided, are there any instructions that tell me where to do just that?

Also, I want to ensure that this feature works with Sharepoint Foundation correct?

    Thanks.

    Hi-

Thank you for your purchase. This product is currently undergoing review and we will be refreshing our webstore soon with the updated product.

There are two options when using this product:

    1. You can update the XTP and UDC files and point them to your server. If you would like to pursue this option, I can provide you with steps via email.

    2. You can create a new XTP, from scratch, using the steps we have provided in the tutorial. Via this method, you'll be creating an XTP and UDC files that are already configured (pointed) to your environment. I believe these steps are included in the package you've downloaded, but if you run into any issues, please let me know so we can help.

This feature has been tested for SharePoint 2010. It has not been tested with MOSS 2007 or SharePoint 2013.

Thank you, and let us know if we can help address any further questions.

After reading further, I noticed that Hilary states the product only seems to work correctly in forms opened in the browser, which is a feature that only comes with Sharepoint 2010 and not Sharepoint Foundation (the free version of 2010).  Therefore, is it safe to assume this product will not work with Sharepoint Foundation?  And, you mentioned the product is going to updated soon.  Do you know if the update will allow use with Sharepoint Foundation?

Re: Help getting started with the Check In/Out feature

    Hi-

When you open an InfoPath client form from SharePoint, and someone else has it open, you receive a message letting you know and offering to open a read only copy.

This behavior does not occur with browser forms. This means that two people could open a browser form simultaneously, and overwrite each other's changes.

So that's where this option comes in, to surpass the limitation of these browser forms.

If you're working in the client, I wouldn't think this feature is needed at all, or have you encountered a scenario where it is?

Re: Help getting started with the Check In/Out feature

Oh, ok.  I completely misunderstood what this feature was for then.  I thought it was a prompt to check in/out Infopath forms when they are opened and closed...much like how the prompt appears for other Microsoft Office products when they are opened and closed from Sharepoint.  For example, when you open an Excel file in Sharepoint, you get a window that asks you if you want to check it out and then when you close the Excel file, you  get a prompt asking if you want to check it in.

I think it would be very helpful if your explanation above was put in the description of the feature on the purchase page...just a suggestion.  :o)

So, I am back to square one.  Do you know of any thing I could implement to give me what I am actually looking for?

Re: Help getting started with the Check In/Out feature

The difference in behavior you're seeing is expected. When you try to open an Excel file, it opens in Excel, and SharePoint locks it (checks it out).

When you try a Filler form, same thing, SharePoint checks it out (and warns any other users that try to open the same form).

What are you trying to accomplish? I don't yet understand the goal, sorry...

Actually it doesn't work the same for Filler forms. You have to manually check it out and then open the form.  When you just open a filler form (without checking it out first) it does not prompt you to check it out like Excel or Word files do.   It allows you to open it, but in read only mode and you have to go to the library to check it out and then open it after you check it out to take it out of read only mode.  In addition, when you close an Infopath form, it just closes and doesn't ask if you want to check it in like Excel does.  Instead you have to go back to the library and check the form in.

What I am looking for is for Infopath to prompt you like Excel and Word does.

Re: Help getting started with the Check In/Out feature

I haven't personally seen an example where the user is prompted to check out an InfoPath form when opening it. My experience with InfoPath Filler is: the first user who opens the form has Edit permission. If another users tries to open the same form, they receive a message letting them know another user has the form open and asking whether they want to open a read-only copy.

I just tried the Check In/Check Out sample. I changed the form library to open in Client instead of Browser, and everything seems to work correctly. I don't know if there's a difference in behavior between my version and your version of SharePoint, but it looks like there is some hope in getting this to work. You could try this too:

    Hope this helps!
