Infopath Form or workflow to populate External Data column type in SharePoint list?

Does anyone know if it is possible to populate an 'External Data' type column from InfoPath 2010 OR a SPD workflow?  I have added an external column to a list and if I manually set the value it populates all the cascaded columns just fine.  I can't get that primary column to populate though through a workflow or  bind it to a field in the InfoPath form though. I do own qRules but I don't use it for anyhting other than creating a list record on one of my forms.

To help with a report, I am hoping i can bring in a couple different columns from the external list into the form list. Everything works but I don't want to have to manually go edit each record to provide the external data field, hopefully there is some what to feed that value to that column.

Thanks in advance for your help!

In the off chance this bubbles up in someone else searches...  I ended up ditching the idea of using the external data column linked to the form.  I simply created a secondary data connection in the form and stamped the values from the external list into promoted text columns in the form library for each record.  I got closer with using the external item picker in the Infopath Form but I couldn't figure out a way to promote that field to the existing form library external data column.  I kept getting some cryptic error that the form template didn't match what was on the server but it would only give that error when I would promote the BDCentity field, any other field would promote and save fine.  Oh well - I'm moving forward again now. Hopefully no one else wastes as much time on this as I did.

Hey - sorry you sort of ended up talking to yourself, but thanks so much for posting your final work around for others, that is much appreciated!
