How to get user profile based on custom property value?

I have a custom user property (EmployeeID) in my SharePoint user profiles which is mapped from AD.

I'm able to retrieve a user profile when I know the user name (using the GetUserProfileByName web service). But... how do I go about retrieving a user profile based on EmployeeID?

In a similar way, I'd imagine it would also be useful to be able to find a user profile based on phone number.

I've got this working by using a data connection to the sharepoint user list at... http://site/_catalogs/users/

I can query by employee ID and return the account name.
