A small subset of users unable to connect to userGroup.asmx GetUserCollectionFromGroup

I have an InfoPath 2007 client form that currently has about 800 users.  in this form, I have a data connection to the userGroup.asmx web service using the operation GetUserCollectionFromGroup.  This web service is used to set permissions on certain sections of the form that are not to be viewed by all users.

On the SharePoint side, we have a members group that has all authenticated users added to the group.  We also have a group called "Creative Services" that has a handful of members - I think there are 8.  The forms sections are set to check to see if the users are a member of Creative Services.  If they are not, the section is hidden.  If they are, the section shows.

This is working fine for most of our users, but we have a handful (about 5 or 6) who receive an error message when they load the form with this web service. "The query cannot be run for the following DataObject:  GetUserCollectionFromGroup.  Infopath cannot run the specified query."  The users who experience the problem are not members of the Creative Services group, but if I add them to the CS group, they no longer receive the error message.  Most of the other users who are in the members group but not in the CS group, get the error message.  I have tried adding the users with the problem to the Members group explicitly (instead of as part of the all authenticated users group) and that doesn't make a difference either.

Does anyone have any ideas about why this might be happening?  Or even some ideas of how to troubleshoot this further?  I'm stumped.

Thanks in advance for any advice.  Please let me know if there are more details needed

Hey Helen, It sounds like your problem is coming solely from those who are in the Members Group? Anyone in the Creative Services Group is able to access the form correctly? It might be worth taking another look at how your groups are set up in SharePoint and making sure you're passing the right values into your query in InfoPath. I once struggled with a "query cannot be run" error a while back because I was passing the wrong value into my query field. A DisplayName rather than a UserID. I'm no InfoPath pro but that's the best advice I can offer you. I find that eventually even the hardest of problems can be figured out with a switched perspective and perseverance. Remember that you can't solve the same problem you created without thinking differently than you did when you created the problem. Einstein probably said it better. Best of luck with this issue.

    Hi thanks for the response,

It IS people in the members group, but not all people.  We have 800 users and I've only gotten reports from about 6 people.  Why are these 6 - in the same group as the other 794 - getting the error message?  The permissions are standard out of the box - nothing unique about them. We also had one user who was getting it and it mysteriously disappeared after a day or so.  I'm stumped.

Maybe I can try creating a new group that has the same permissions as the member group and see if that works out better for that handful of users...worth a shot.I'll let you know if it helps.

    Thanks again,

    Helen

    I figured it out.

Because i was using the GetUserCollectionFromGroup to check a user's membership in a group, I needed to enable the option in the SharePoint group to allow everyone to view the group membership.  Once I turned that on, it appears that my users are no longer getting the error message.  Now that I've fixed it, it seems to make sense...how can you check if you're a member of a group if you can't see the group membership?

Hopefully this will help someone else out somewhere down the line.
