I have a web form that I created to track vacation for my team. Everything works "except"........There is a text field that is updated by function userName(). After the requestor submits two things happen. An email send the form to the manager and a data connection post to a List on the main site. As I understood it, the userName() function should update when this form is updated, however the managers name is not populating.

I should have indicated that in either case (in the email or from the list) when the manager opens the form the field userName() does not update.

So, I think you are saying that the username function doesn't appear to be working correctly in the browser? Does it work if the user opens the form in InfoPath filler (if they have it installed to check)?

Unfortunately no. It only seems to work the first time it is completed. I thought maybe it was limitation of the browser because our manager likes to use firefox but they its the same Internet Explorer version (8.0.6001.18702) for both workstations.

 

I'm not sure that default value formulas that use userName() are able to detect that the formula value has changed when someone opens the form.  As an alternative, how about adding a Form Load rule that sets the field to the value of userName()?  That should definitely do what you are looking to do.

Ok - so I created test field and then added a Form Load rule to to set the new feild's value = username(). After a test this has worked and now the value gets updated everytime someone different opens the form.

Thank you for the suggestion, I didn't think about moving the function from the feild to the form level.
