Want resubmit form to create new records in db

    Hello everyone,

I just found this forum and hope someone will be able to provide a solution.

I have an Infopath form that is used to submit records to a database.
The form contains a repeating section so users can create and submit multiple records using the insert item function.

Some users want to save the form onto their local machines so it loads up with the fields pre-filled. They then make changes to the data and submit the form. What obviously happens is the records in the database are modified. What they would like to happen is that new records are created once the data has been modified for a record.

Has anyone created this sort of scenario before who can help?

    Thanks,

    Gillian

Hi Gillian and welcome to our forum!
Sounds like you need to create a new record before submitting. I believe this has been discussed previously. There is a default new record functionality when you create a form using a database connection. You should be able to reuse that.

    Hi Patrick,

Thank you for quite a swift response. Can you please explain a bit more about creating the new record, or point me in the direction where this was discussed?

    Thanks,

    Gillian

    Hi ariestech

As Patrick says,If u are creating a form using a data connection, then a default "New Record" button appears on the form. You can use this to add a row and submit the new record to the database. Also the users can modify the existing records and submit it.

    Hi Abhishek,

The problem with using the new button is it clears all the data in the fields. I want to be able to open the saved form, which will open with all the fields prefilled, and when I click on submit, it creates new records instead of overwriting the old ones.

The saved form contains multiple records, as many as 50.

    Regards,

    Gillian

    Hi Ariestech
I got ur problem.U want the modified rows in InfoPath to be inserted and not updated in the database.
What I would do in your place is use a webservice with a simple "Insert" query to insert the changed row into the database.

Assume that there are 4 rows in the database.
When InfoPath form opens, the 4 rows are displayed.
User makes a change to the 2nd and 3rd row.
Keep another field in the Repeating Section say "CheckModify" (boolean).
So for the 2nd and 3rd row where changes have been made, set "CheckModify" to true.
Now in the web service, insert those rows which have their corressponding "CheckModify" field to true.
Forget the rest of the rows.

    Regards,
    Abhishek.

Did you ever figure out how to do this without using a web service? I am trying to do the same thing. Maybe have a button that is a "Submit as New" but I do not know code or web services...

There is a free eval version of our Database Accelerator in the Downloads section. You should check that out for a codeless solution.

For the above issue, it has something to do with the ID of the row in the SQL DB I think. Probably need to increment that or something. Just a wild guess. Sorry I don't have more time.

    Hi,
i would like to attempt this as well but without the use of web services (use of any other code is okay, e.g. JScript).

    Is it possible?

Re: Want resubmit form to create new records in db

I am having the exact same issue. I have looked EVERYWHERE I can think of to find the answer. Basically, I saw a demo where something VERY close to what I wanted to do was shown. It was in a MS Webcast where the presenter did not want to retype all of the data, repeating sections, etc., etc. so he had a button labeled LOAD DEMO DATA. When he clicked the button it created a boiler-plate set of data that he was then able to modify. When he clicked the SUBMIT button, a new set of records were created. Viola! THAT IS WHAT I believe we are all want... AND yes, without using web services. The MS Webcast presenter was Ron Cundiff.
