Grouping fields, show/hide, and sharepoint list

My goal is the have several different groups of fields and show/them based on input from other controls. The problem I'm running into is that I can't seem to have multiple "sections" with a Sharepoint list. Ok, I can have multiple sections, but I was hoping that all the sections do is group data. It looks I can have one section and use it multiple times but not with different rules. Is this a limitation of using a list? Is there a recommended way to show/hide a group of controls other than what I was doing? I'd like to stay with using a list as my backend but maybe that won't happen.

You can have multiple sections bound to the same group node in your schema.  The rules are control specific, so you will be able to create different show/hide rules for each of those controls.  You will get a warning that multiple controls are bound to the same field, but this is okay and won't block you from publishing.  Hope this helps.
