Open another Form from within a Form

    Hello,

    Infopath/Sharepoint/Office 2010

Is it possible to have an Infopath customized form (data stored in Sharepoint tables), from which (Form 1) a user can call and open another form (Form 2), fill/submit Form 2, and create a link in Form 1 to Form 2, and a link in Form 2 to Form 1?

Form 1 is a contact form to be completed with general information about the/each contact, i.e. first/last name, a review of the contact and its solution, type of contact (phone/email/fax) etc. So this is always completed.

Form 2 gathers further information that is not needed all the time, to take action to be processed by another party.

So, could a button be added in Form 1 to open the 'take action form', it captures automatically some relevant data such as customer name for example, the user finishes and submits Form 2, and a link to Form 2 is automatically embedded in From 1, and vica versa, so that when Form 1 it is being reviewed the onreader could know of and if needed open Form 2?

I hope this makes sense to provide some guidance.

    Thank you,

    StefanG

    Hi StefanG,

I think this can be done using code. Here's a blog post from Greg Collins that might help you.

Instead of using code, I would suggest you to use views in the form. You can create a form and a view in the form which will have extended information about the contact. You can place button in the first form and on button put a rule to switch views to the extended view of the form.

Let me know if you have some questions or concerns.

    Hello Jo-Anne,

Thank you for pointing this out. This sounds like it is offering what I after. The code and set up bit is a bit scary looking for a newby to InfoPath/SharePoint though. ;-)

I'll have to take a look if and how I can work this in my existing form. Maybe start with a test first.

    Thank you again,

    Thank you princevis.

Perhaps I am mistaken, but I love to learn.

My form one goes off on one SharePoint List and I envisioned form 2 to store the may be present data in a different list.

In essense, what I am thinking is that lets say I have list one with 25 columns, and list two with 10 additional columns, and I were to proceed with the different views option and dont use the extra 10 fields in 90% of the cases, does that not take much more space, than having two separate lists?

    Again, i'm probably way off.

    Hi StefanG,

I think I understand what you're trying to do now. Having two views will not only take much more space but will affect the time loading the form with data coming from two lists - and you only need to see data from one list, correct? In your first form, why not put a hyperlink to open your second form? Adding a link to connect the two forms will not be easy, though. I imagine form 2 should be submitted first for you to be able to get a the link to it. Sorry I don't have a solution to offer now. You can try browsing more in this site and see if you can find a similar scenario.
