Page post back issue with Multiple-selection list box

    Hi

Environment Details: I am using SharePoint 2010 for hosting the form and InfoPath 2010 for designing the form. It is a browser based form.

The issue is:  my page is getting post back on coming out of any control's focus on the InfoPath form only "when i have a multiple-selection libst box control which has data source from a custom sharepoint list and also with filter option". Every control lost focus is firing the page load. I am mainly concern about radio button control. Because, when i click a radio button it selects but as it refreshes the page, it is deselecting again. From second time, i am able to select steadily. however, still the page gets refresh. i.e., just blinks once.

I tested the behaviour of the form by deleting filter alone from the multi select control's data source. Then my page is working as expected. I have issue only when i apply filter. the filter condition is "a column value in the data source = value that is selected in other dropdown control (which gets data from one more Datasource)."

My Main requirement is to create a cascading controls. primary control should be a dropdwon and secondary control  should be a multi select control. Hence i went for dropdown and multiple selection list box.

Kindly let me know where i am doing wrong.

    thanks before hand

I wonder if since the filter is causing your issue if you may want to return your data pre-filtered. I don't know what your data source is for your multi-select list box, but if it is a SharePoint list you could use the OData REST service to return just what you need based on the selection from the drop down, or you could use the query fields now available in a SharePoint list connection. Then you could get rid of the filter altogether.

Re: Page post back issue with Multiple-selection list box

    Hi Hilary,

Thank you very much. Your suggested idea of using Odata REST service solved my issue. Thank u very very very much. One more new issue i found after solving. It is, old selected values are not cleared on multi-select list box when new set of items are loaded on first dropdown change.

    For example,

I selected America in first dropdown and hence respective items shown and i selected North America and South America in multi-select list box.

Now i selected Uk in first dropdwon and respective items are displayed along with the ID's of the above selected two values i.e., North America and South America.

any idea on how to clear those values when there are new items loaded on first dropdown change?

Oh - I forgot with a multi select the way the schema is set up - a repeating field that gets an instance added with each selection. You can set your dropdown to set that field to blank when it changes - you'd still have some blank instances of the field which you could use a filter to not display - I think there is no way in the IP UI to remove those instances of the field however.

Re: Page post back issue with Multiple-selection list box

    Thanks a lot Hilary.

from your message "dropdown to set that field to blank when it changes", is this dropdown you are refering is first dropdown? I tried this by writing a rule on change action of first/initial dropdown and i gave left blank for the field of multi-select. Which didnt work. I guess i did mistake here ie., intead selecting he field to which the multi-select is binded, i have to give to repeating field as you said.

if possible could you please share the .xsn file where you implemented this requirement.

    thank you

Set a rule on the field that is bound to the drop down. That rule should set the field that is bound to the multi-select to blank when the field that is bound to the drop down changes. As mentioned in my post above - that will leave you with additional blank fields in your multi-select - and I'm not sure how to handle for that w/out using code or qRules to remove them.

Re: Page post back issue with Multiple-selection list box

     Hi Hilary,

I finally solved the issue by other approach. i.e., deleting all the values of multi-select group by assigning empty group to it. and i am doing this on dropdown change rule and then re populating new values.

Thank you very much for your help.

Re: Page post back issue with Multiple-selection list box

    Hi Hilary,

    One more small help.

In the REST service method, on dropdown change event, we are updating the URL to pull relative data. however, i am hardcoding the site collection and sub site name where my List is present. If i move this Form to production environment where list may present in different sub site, then my form is failing in querying the REST on dropdown change.

Hence could you please help me out in forming a relative URL for my requirement. Relative URL is workin fine, if my list is there at site collection level. like...

    /_vti_bin/ListData.svc/SubAreas?$filter=BusinessId eq 1

however, i am not able to form relative url for a sub site List. i.e., if my SubAreas list is there in a subsite called "Employees". Currently i am using like this...

    /Employees/_vti_bin/ListData.svc/SubAreas?$filter=BusinessId eq 1

    thank you before hand

Thank you Hilary for your prompt response.

Just want to confirm, if you understood my issue or not.

basically, i am looking for List's relative URL using REST method.

    Thank you

Re: Page post back issue with Multiple-selection list box

     Hi Hilary,

for the REST method that you suggested for cascading requirement, it fails when normal reader uses the form. Surprisingly, form is loading fine with data that is pulled by REST URL. However,  it fails when user changes drop down. where in drop down, i am executing Change REST URL action to repopulate new values in multi select control.

This functionality is working if i give contribute permission for reader user on the site collection. However, i should not give him contribute permission.

Here is the error message that i receive when i tested with reader account..

"MOSS StateService threw an exception: A Microsoft SharePoint Server State Service error occurred while processing your request"

     your help is highly appreciated.

    Thank you

That's interesting - I've not run into that issue before. Are there any additional messages in your SharePoint Logs? Have you tried a web search on your error message?
