    Repeating table question

    This one is a doozy!

I have a repeating table with 2 fields(fieldA over fieldB)in the same row and column. I want to run data validation on these fields in subsequent rows. The data validation needs to be like this:

the new rows of fieldA and FieldB cannot be equal to the inverse(fieldB over fieldA) of the fields in preceding rows

I'm totally lost on this one!!!

    Re: Repeating table question

An easy way to do this would be to add one more field to each row, FieldC, and use a function on this field to calculate the inverse. Then for each FieldA and FieldB on subsequent rows, use a data validation expression like this:

    . = preceding::my:FieldC

You might be able to do this calculation in XPath and get out of having an extra node, but it might be pretty difficult.

I hope this helps you out! If I'm misunderstanding your problem, please tell me where I'm going wrong. :)

Thanks that got me started I think I need to make two new fields though for what I need. I just need to know how to show the text from two separate fields in one field.

    Re: Repeating table question

To show text from two fields in one, use the concat() function on the one field.

    1. Double-click field3
    2. Click the function button in the Default Value section
    3. Click Insert Function
    4. Find the concat function, select, and click OK.
    5. double-click to add field1 and field2 appropriately.
    6. Click OK.

    Good luck!

    Re: Repeating table question

    Matt,

I tried that and it gives me the option of inputing 3 fields when I just need two. here's what it looks like (concat(double click to insert field, double click to insert field, double click to insert field)

If I just insert two fields it prompts me to enter a third field. If I delete the third "enter field" I get a formula error.

I think my brain is leaking out of my ear!!!

    Thanks

    Re: Repeating table question

You should be able to to just two fields:

    concat( field1, field2 )

Maybe you forgot to delete the last comma when you deleted the third field. If the above doesn't work, just make the third field and empty string:

    concat( field1, field2, "" )

However, the cool thing about concat is that it accepts (I think) an unlimited number of arguments, so the following will even work:

    concat( "1", "2", "3", field75, field80, " Quote of the day", "etc.", "etc." )

Please don't get any brain on the carpet. :)
