    Offline availability of infopath forms

    hi all!
I developed one form in these months and I saved many version on my computer. I published it on our sharepoint site and in a shared folder of our server. Now I did some tests: I disabled any network device and I tried to access some forms (referring on sharepoint site and on shared folder) received by Email as attachments.
Well...they cannot be opened:double-click on the attachment in the email and an error form appears "Could not open <templete's path>" and then another form with the following text:
"Infopath cannot open the following file <XML File> The following templete for the form cannot be found <templete's path> "

This is a real surprise for me: to open a form even if you're offline, do you have to open it while you're still online? and if only you save it, can't you open it, can you?
    It's quite strange...

    Hi Tatopitta!

What version of InfoPath are you using? SP1 should support dual URN/URL mode solutions which means it should work offline just fine. Of course, this is not true if you have some kind of secondary data source that you are accessing.

However, it sounds like you have some weird state where you are URL-only. InfoPath uses the IE cache, so even the URL-only pre-SP1 forms should still work offline. There must be something you are doing that requires access. Is the form full-trust?

Hi Patrick, thank u for answer. My form is full trust with a digital certificate. It's SP2 form and it hasn't secondary data source. It's received by user by email and it is sent by them by email and it MUST be filled in offline. what does it mean? How is it available offline?
    Thank u!

You are sending the .xsn file right? If you send an .xml file that is associated with an .xsn file that their computer has never had the oppurtunity to cache, then it will not have anything to open it with.

Re: Offline availability of infopath forms

Thank u, Matt! My question is: to open an xml file received by email you must open every form you receive or only the first one? Are the forms available offline even if you open only the first received?
My templete is full trust, doesn't refer to external data sources and designed with Infopath SP2.

What about dual URN/URL mode solutions named by Patrick?

    Thank u again!

Re: Offline availability of infopath forms

As long as you are sending .xml files that associate with a template file that the user has already opened, you should be fine. However, when you make revisions to the template and publish a new version you will have to send the new version via e-mail (or other methods) and allow the user to open the form from the .xsn file. After the form has been opened from the .xsn file it will cache locally and any .xml files created with the same form template will open with the cached version. This can get kind of confusing, but as long as they have the same version .xsn cached locally as the .xml files you are sending it should work.

I haven't worked with dual URN/URL, so I'll let Patrick explain that one.

Re: Offline availability of infopath forms

    Thank u MFaus,
that's I supposed to know but when I try to open a form attached in an email while I'm offline, I cannot open it becouse Infopath doesn't find the templete. The templete is on sharepoint site and it's just cached on my computer...so I guess why it happens this to me.

I noticed that when I save the form received by email, the attribute href containing the templete's url changes its value: before saving it the form refers to the templete on sharepoint site, after it refers to local copy of templete.
    thank u.
