Populating InfoPath 2010 dropdown list with WCF

    Hi All,

I am a novice in IP. My requirements are that I need to populate dropdown list field in IP 2010 through a WCF web service. I made a WCF service that returns a dataset.

I need the dropdown list field to be populated with the dataset that is being returned from WCF. Could anyone please guide as to what steps one has to take in order to make this functionality successful. I have written a WCF service that returns a successful dataset when I press F5 (VS2010) in WCF host application, however when I try connecting IP data connection with WCF it errors out saying "Some external data was not retrieved. The form will load without the requested data".

Any help would be highly appreciated - I have been busy doing this since the past week or so and have not been succful in doing it, its driving me crazy which seemed a very straight forward thing.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi aszia787,

We have many Web services that do this. My guess is that your WCF Web service is not returning default data because you used the wrong the sample values when you set it up. Another explanation is that it isn't returning data in the correct format. Make sure your Web Service is encoding the data correctly. There are several encoding standards and InfoPath doesn't support them all.
