Closing Infopath Application without using code.

    All,

I have been tasked to close Infopath, after a form has been received and approved, upon submission of approval. I currently have a form that allows the Approval section to appear after the form has been submitted. Is there a way to close the form AND Infopath when clicking on the Submit button, in effect creating an additional Submit process? Please note I do not have VSTA installed.

    Thanks in advance,

    Phil

To my knowledge, there is no way to close the application without code, just the form itself. What about a browser form?

Re: Closing Infopath Application without using code.

I have the form open in a browser but when it is submitted I have a workflow designed to send a link to the approvers. I am using the "Encoded Absolute URL" method in the email that is sent. The URL has within it the <name>.xml. When the link is clicked the .xml file opens in InfoPath, as opposed to IE. It is this infopath that is needed to be closed. If I could have the .xml file open in IE I believe I could force IE to close. Any thoughts?

You can open it in IE - Here's an MSDN link on browser form Query Params. OpenIn is the one you are interested in. I'm not sure how you'll close IE, tho.

I have had this happen before.. but I don't remember exactly how I fixed it. I think it had to do with the submit button I created? I believe I changed the submit button to Submit vs. Rules. Then within the submit options I added my rules. Under advanced I told the form to close.. Or I just re-created the submit button.. Pretty sure it has to do with how the form is being submitted. Let me know what you find out.. ~Jim

My bad.. I thought you recieved the form closed message in the browser and it was not taking you back to the SP library..

Yes, submit options can include closing the form. Regular rules can also be added to close the form. However, closing the form will not close InfoPath if the form is opened in client (Filler).

I understand and use the "Source=" to close the form and re-direct the user to the URL specified in the "Source=" section. But I don't believe that applies to opening the .xml file produced when a form is submitted. I need to know how to close infopath, not just the .xlm file, using rules if possible.

The OpenIn parameter does apply to existing XML as well as XSNs. So does Source. Open an existing XML in the browser (from a library configured to open in the browser) and you'll see the source param in the URL. The MSDN page I linked to explicitly states in the section on OpenIn:

If a Source query parameter is specified, the default value is Browser.

Thus, if in the URL to the XML you include in your email, you include OpenIn=Browser, the XML should open in Browser. Or include Source, if that is your preference.

    But a URL like this:

    http://<server>/_layouts/FormServer.aspx?XmlLocation=/<library>/<formName>.xml&OpenIn=Browser

Is going to open in the Browser. If you want to redirect on close, use Source instead - if you include Source, your XML will open in the Browser. Again, though, it won't close Internet Explorer when you close the form.
