Updating a record in SQL Server Database from InfoPath 2007

I have an InfoPath form that is used to populate an MS SQL Server 2008 database.

I have a Main Query which is used to submit data to the Database and there are also several Secondary Queries which are used to provide dropdown selections to the users on the form and I just populate the main table with the index values into the related tables like any good old relational database should work. The form has about 40 or so fields that relate to my main database table.

The issue I am having is that every time I submit a form to the database, a new record is created. I would like to be able to use an option from the button control to either submit a new record or update an existing record.
    Is this possible?
If so, then what’s the best way to go about it?

BTW – I’ve got over 20 years of database experience and less than 20 hours of InfoPath experience, so please be gentle.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Cheers.

    Hi Ron,

We have a lot of customers who contact us about our Database Accelerator (DBXL) product which is a generic web service that will allow you to sumbit your InfoPath data to SQL, it handles the duplicate issue you are talking about.

While what you want to do can be done with InfoPath (an possibly custom code) you might find an off the shelf product like DBXL a much easier and faster way to go about this - we have had a lot of customers who have spent a lot of time trying to figure this out on their own and find it very frustrating.  Additionally since DBXL is a generic web service you can use DBXL with any InfoPath form and you can map your data to SQL however you need to.  DBXL is a middle layer that sits in between your forms and SQL which means you have flexibilty on the design side in InfoPath and SQL and when working with InfoPath this flexiblity is a very nice thing to have.

We do offer a free trial of DBXL here: http://www.qdabra.com/en/products/DBXL.aspx and I can give you a live demo of the product and talk to you about your scenario if you like.  Bottom line though is that DBXL is an easy to use solution that should really save you time.

    Ted
