Read-Only Attachments... why oh why :|

One of the forms I've had to create has got quite a few fields on it and when the form is complete it should go to a read-only view. I've done this and it works fine, except the attachments won't open in the read-only view. I've done some reading and it appears to be a 'feature'. The suggestion I've seen is to remove the read-only property of the form and then make each form read-only individually. Easy to do but a bit time consuming. Does any one have any other ideas how to do it?

and does anyone have any idea why?

How about adding another button to the read-only page that takes the user to a new view that has only the attachment(s)? You could hide the button if the form does not have an attachment. Put another button on the attachment page to bring the user back to the read only page.

If this is a web-enabled form published to SharePoint I have a couple other ideas too??

Are you asking how to make an attachment field not changable when the form is read only? Or how to make the actual attachment read-only?

It's easier to control the attachment field than it is to control the actual attachment.

    Hi,

Thank you BlvdWheat, the form is a non-browser enabled form which is published to SharePoint (WSS 3.0). I may try your idea at some point today.

Leoffneym, the point I was trying to make (badly) is that I've got a form where a user can go in and add an attachment in View 1. When the form is submitted and marked as complete, everyone who views the form then goes to a read only page. This has been set read-only in the properties. The problem is, by doing this, no one can then open the attachments. Was mainly wondering if anyone had any ideas how to get around the problem without making each control read-only and the form overall not, or if anyone could provide some insight as to why Microsoft set InfoPath to do this as it seems a bit.... wierd. :)

Using the View properties Read-Only works great, but not for file Attachments, as you have noticed.  One of the oddities of IP I suppose.

The only thing I can think of would be to manually change each property to read-only.  It can be cumbersome.

To get the attachments working on the read-only view where each individual field has been changed to read-only (since it won't work when the view is read-only):

    • Add the attachment field
    • Go into properties
    • Uncheck the Allow uesr to browse, delete, and replace files.

The end users can then open the attachment, but cannot save any new attachments.
