Can you add a rule to "Submit" action?

I am trying to cause a value to be added to another field and I can not seem to find any way to do it through the Submit action button properties. I have "Submit Options" selected as "E-mail" to a single destination which makes the "Perform custom action using Rules" grayed out. Thanks for any help given.

Just change the button to use Rules instead. A button that uses Rules is able to Submit, but a button that is configured to just Submit cannot have other rules.

    Good luck!

What will not allow you? Can you explain the issue you've run into?

InfoPath allows you to have a button that uses Rules. Within a rule, one of the options for Actions is Submit Data. So you could, for example, set a field's value, Submit data, and Close the form: three actions in one button.

Please elaborate so we can help. Thanks.

You're looking at the form's submit options, but you should look at the individual button's properties.

    I'm attaching a screenshot.

Here's a sample form with a button that has multiple actions within one rule.

    Hope this helps.

Re: Can you add a rule to "Submit" action?

Your the man! That attachment really helped. I didn't realize that you can use "set a field's value:" to an email address. I thought you had to use the "Email" action to accomplish this.

The reason for the rules was so the submit button would always be hidden when clicked. My sequence for "field" (Default value 1):

    1) "Submit" button is hidden but save button is visible (Conditional Format: field "is equal to" 1 or field "is equal to" 3 for "Hide this control")

    2) After clicking "Save" button, "Submit" appears because Set field's value: field="2'

    3) Once (and only once) clicking "Submit" remains hidden. Set field's value: field="3'

    3) "Save" button always visible and clicking will result in "Submit" staying hidden. CANNOT GET SUBMIT TO STAY HIDDEN!

What is the command to concatenate values so when one clicks the submit button it will always stay hidden? I have "concat(Field, "1")" and even tried "sum(Field) + 1". Does not work.

One other question (I know I know), how do I CC: to an email address? My team's distribution list also needs to be sent off as CC: Very much appreciated all your help!

I'm afraid I don't understand your scenario, but the function for concatenation is concat().

When you create the email submit data connection via the Data Connection Wizard, you are allowed to enter a CC.

This is probably going to take you all of 10 seconds to make it work.

    My process is currently this:

Note: "Save" button always visible - "Submit" field default value is 1

    1) "Submit" button is hidden because of Conditional Format: Submit "is equal to" 1 or Submit "is equal to" 3 for "Hide this control"
    2) "Save" button is clicked resulting in "Submit" button becoming visible because of Set Field's value: Submit="Submit + 1"
    3) "Submit" button is clicked causes email, Set a field "Submit" to be 3 thereby hidding button, and closes form.
    4) Opening form shows "Submit" button is hidden but clicking "Save" should result in still keeping "Submit" hidden because now the value should be 4 because of step 3. Am I wrong in assuming?

Re: Can you add a rule to "Submit" action?

I think you shouldn't go this direction at all.

Change the field to be boolean (true or false).

Then each button click can set the value of that field as needed, true or false, simply.

This idea of adding +1 to a text value (my:submit is not formatted as a number) seems harder than it should be.

Re: Can you add a rule to "Submit" action?

I tried Boolean before but I need the submit button always visible.

I knew I was running my:submit field as text because when I switched to number, I received the "Field or group: my:Submit - Error: Only integers allowed." Why?

What is the correct argument to add to a number field? Submit + 1, etc does not work. Number?
