Auto Populating Text Fields from another field

I have searched on here and also through the manual but can not find a simple solution (or one at all) to what I thought would be a simple task in Info Path.

    In simple terms:

I have a drop down list field where you can select different peoples names as the options.

I have a second text field that I want to auto populate with an email address 'dependent' on who was selected in the drop down box before.

Basically I want to tell this text field that...

"if field A=James then Field B=james [email protected]"

Is this not a default option on Infopath in that it requires some scripting knowledge?

    Many thanks.

I think this falls in the topic of cascading dropdowns. There are several threads on this just try searching for 'cascading dropdown'.
You can also look in the How-To -> Tutorials section of this site and look into the Lists category

If you want to use Rules instead of code, double-click on the textbox, go to Rules and Add...

You will have to add a rule for every entry in the drop-down list and the rule will look just like what you've posted.

    Thanks for both replys.

Having read the posts on drop down lists I also came to the conclusion that what I'm looking for is some kind of conditional rule 'options' ... and this is where my problem lies because i don't appear to have this option showing up.

I also tried to apply some conditions to a submit button but all the instructions refer to a 'set up data connection' option under the Tools Menu, and I don't have this either!

I have just downloaded the SDK pack thinking this may install it but it hasn't!

I have the 2003 version and am trying to use this in conjunction with sharepoint and know it's the way to go so am not giving up on it!

So could you just let me know how you are accessing the 'rules' bit so I can double check I am not looking in the wrong place?

    Many thanks!

Thanks Matt! It was as I suspected, I don't get the option of Rules.

My field properties just show the Data Validation option, there isn't a 'Rules' Option below it.

This information in itself is valuable though as it stops me looking elsewhere and trying other things.

As I can imagine from your other topic you don't have SP2 installed, yet. That's why you don't have this feature. Fix your install problem first and the rest will be easy.
