Unspecified Error After Adding New Field to Existing Forms

I have a simple InfoPath 2010 form that submits its content to both a SharePoint list as well as a SQL database table.  Everything works fine until I try to add a new field to the database and form.  First of all, when I modify the template, the "Automatically upgrade existing forms" option disappears on the version control screen.  I got around this by saving the template and reopening it - sure enough, the option reappeared.  I then publish the new template to the library.  All appears well (the new field shows up and is editable) until I try to submit one of the existing forms with new data.  I then get an "Unspecified" error and am unable to save the form.  Newly created forms work just fine.  I did look at the XML file and the "AttributeType" tag is missing for the new field.  If I add it manually, things start working again but that is far from an ideal solution.  I have seen similar posts here but no resolution.  It seems that I must be missing something simple.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hi Kai,

Best practice is to use a Web Service. InfoPath can connect directly to SQL but there are numerous limitations which I have detailed in previous posts and blogs. Bottom line: direct connection is not going to give you a scalable solution. Adding an abstraction layere (aka, a Web Service) will. Qdabra provides a free download to a generic Web service that maps to SQL. It's cheap if it works and we have various options for you. Sorry about the sales pitch, but we developed this accelerator to save you and others time in developing InfoPath solutions that connect to databases.

    Best regards,
