How to open a form when the template no longer exists

    Hi,

I have a problem opening some forms that were based on a template that no longer exists. Saying it no longer exists isn't entirely accurate though. Only the template name and ID have changed. We used to have different templates that used the same ID and we kept having problems of conflicts. This is why I had to change the template ID.

Anyway, I tried editing one of the forms that won't open using Notepad++. What I did is that I updated both the href tag and the ID of the form template used in the code of this form. I was fairly certain this would work but it doesn't. Am I doing something wrong or is it just not possible?

Thanks very much for your help!

Yep, modifying your form templates can sometimes be hit and miss for backwards compatibility with forms from the old versions.

Drastic data structure changes can break the previous forms.

Your approach is exactly what I have tried in the past and I have been met with varying success/no success. Sometimes I've had to 'pad' the old forms with 'missing' data nodes to allow them to be recognised by the current template.

What kind of error are you receiving when opening the forms? Would you be able to provide the template .xsn and sample 'old form' ?

Thanks for your reply! After a few tries I was finally able to get it to work. In most cases, updating the href and the template ID wasn't enough. I also had to update the solutionVersion (which can be found in Tools > Form Options > Versioning). So far it's working fine for me so it looks like this issue has been fixed :)

Anyway, thanks very much for your help!
