Copy large table takes a long time?

I'm copying a large list (about 450 items, 4 column table) into an InfoPath browser form using the copytable command in qrules.  It takes about 2 minutes to load the form (i copy table on form load).

Should these long load times be expected?

     Thanks!

That's a long time. In general, querying SharePoint from an InfoPath rich client form is not going to be as fast as from a browser form. The browser form should be much faster because it's running the query on the server as opposed to the user's computer.

I will add a support case to look at CopyTable performance improvements. In the meantime, if you are able to filter the results and reduce the amount you are pulling down on load, the user perception will be better. You can use the Insert row technique that Jo-Anne describes here instead of Copy Table and it might be faster. Certainly, it's more flexible (for example, doesn't require that source and target tables have the same structure). You could add subsequent rules and actions to successively copy down data as you need it. Or, at the very simplest, just add a button to the form that says "Click Here to Start" which copies it down. That way the InfoPath form will open quickly and users will click the button. The perception isn't as bad because they had control over the initial process.

Hopefully, the Insert technique will be faster, but if not, I'd make changes to the UI to improve perceived load time. We'll look at performance enhancements in a week or two.

I'll look at Jo-Anne's solution.  I tried it once without success.  I'll see if I can get it to work this time.

BTW, thanks for the webcasts, they're great!

Do you need all 450 items in your form? That seems like a lot of items to need to be added to each XML....

It's an order sheet for equipment.  I have a repeating table inside a repeating section.  Each section has a dropdown to filter the table based on gear type (category column in SP list).  So I'm basically pulling all of our gear into the form, then allowing the user to filter based on what type of gear he needs to request.

Is it possible to run a copytable command with a filter?

Why not just use a secondary data source for the equipment and use FilterOwssvr to pull the cascading children down and then copy it over only after they add the item?

Couple of questions about that Patrick,

If I have it filter and populate a repeating table based on a drop-down list box, do I apply the filter on the repeating table?  Isn't it just displaying the data from the secondary data source?  How do I copy just the filtered data over?

I attached a sample of what my section/table configuration is identical to.  Hilary gave me this sample.

Yes -- add the filter to the /row parameter: my:myFields/my:group1/my:group2[my:Name='itemToCopy']

Cool, thanks.  I'm going to try that first.

Is this added to the source row, or dest row parameter?

My thought was you were asking about filtering your source data. So the rowsrc param.
