    Repeating tables on SharePoint

    Dear all,

I hope that I found here the right place to post my problem:

In an InfoPath 2003 form I have a repeating table and I want to display the contents of this repeating table on SharePoint. But I have heared that SharePoint cannot display 1:n-relations.

Do you know of this problem and/or do you know any possibility to display every single row of a repeating table and not only the sum or amount of rows?

Thank you very much in advance. I'd really appreciate your efforts.

    Hi, Joern:

Unfortunately, you won't be able to do this unless you submit the items in your form to a SharePoint list. For IP 2003, you'll either need to write code or have users submit items one at a time using a secondary data source with some CAML in it. Sorry I don't have better news for you!

It has been a long time since I've used IP 2003, but I know that in 2007 & 2010, we can choose to merge repeating fields when we promote them, so you can promote the fields and get the data in a semi-colon delimited list in your form library.

    Hi Hilary,

thank you for your quick response.

I was already assuming that I would need code. Unfortunately, I do not have experiences with writing code. How would the code look like? Would it be XML-code?

Then, you proposed a secondary data source with CAML in it. Can you please explain what CAML is?

Fortunately, we are going to get Office 2010 until yearend. I'm already looking forward to see all the additional features.

Thank you very much in advance for your support.

    Hi Joern,

I'm assuming you would like to report on the child table data? Is this mainly for business intelligence (reporting) or do your end users also need to see the data? Do you want to display it as a sub list underneath your main form rows?

You could also use our Web Service, which stores your XML in a database and allows 1-n queries of the data. No database skills are required. The Web service is called DBXL (database accelerator) and we have a free trial. Works with 2003, 2007, and 2010. Lots of other features, but the main reason we built it back in 2004 was to handle the 1-n relationship issue in SharePoint. One more important note: no coding is required and the product is inexpensive (free for 90 days too).

The CAML option is essentially code. We can definitely provide some coding resources for you and the Euro is indeed strong, but my hunch is that it would be cheaper to just use the Web service.

    Re: Repeating tables on SharePoint

    Hi Patrick,

I have a couple of users who should fill-out the form and send it to a SharePoint library via secondary data connection.

Within the form I have a repeating table with two fields ( 'Customer' and 'Info' ) in which the users can write several information - just as many as they want to.

When every user has sent his form to SharePoint the Management want to have an overview of all forms. But currently, I can only display either the first row of the repeating table or the amount or sum of rows.

    Re: Repeating tables on SharePoint

I've done the same thing...I just wrote (my forms have a bunch of code in them) vbscript to extract the Repeating Table into a single rich-text box.  I then promoted the rich text box to the SharePoint library when I published the form.

    Script looks something like this:

objApplications is the repeating table, objSingleApp is a variable to move through the rows of that table.  strSingleApp will contain the extracted data.  Within the While Not loop, we are pulling all the form fields I need into the strSingleApp variable.

Dim objApplications: Set objApplications = XDocument.DOM.selectNodes("/my:New_User_ID_Form/my:Software_Section/my:AppsSection/my:AppTable")

Dim objSingleApp: set objSingleApp = objApplications.nextNode()

set objSingleApp = objApplications.nextNode() 'Skip the header

                                    Dim strSingleApp: strSingleApp = ""

                                    While Not(objSingleApp Is Nothing)

                                                    Dim Publisher : Publisher  = objSingleApp.selectSingleNode("my:App_Publisher").text

                                                    Dim Application : Application  = objSingleApp.selectSingleNode("my:App_Name").text

                                                    Dim License: License = objSingleApp.selectSingleNode("my:App_License").text

                                                    Dim App_Type: App_Type = objSingleApp.selectSingleNode("my:App_Type").text

                                                    Dim SoftMedia: SoftMedia = objSingleApp.selectSingleNode("my:App_SoftMedia").text

                                                    Dim ApplicationGroupName: ApplicationGroupName = objSingleApp.selectSingleNode("my:App_Group").text

                                                    Dim DeployType: DeployType = objSingleApp.selectSingleNode("my:App_Deploy_Type").text

                                                    set objSingleApp = objApplications.nextNode()

                                                    strSingleApp = strSingleApp + "Publisher: " + Publisher + chr(13) + _

                                                                    "Application: " + Application + chr(13) + _

                                                                    "License: " + License + chr(13) + _

                                                                    "App_Type: " + App_Type + chr(13) + _

                                                                    "SoftMedia: " + SoftMedia + chr(13) + _

                                                                    "ApplicationGroupName: " + ApplicationGroupName + chr(13) + _

                                                                    "DeployType: " + DeployType + chr(13) + chr(13)
